Ok....my first rant (kind of)
A very good friend of mine has a FANTASTIC 15.1 L/W Blagdon cob. Not really a stereotypical as he is more of a mini competition horse. He really is the salt of the earth; daugter has competed at (and won) at BSJA up to Newcomers, he XC's, does ok dressage, hacks anywhere in any conditions.
Well, they've had him since he was 3 (is now 14) and daugter has gone off to work in London but seeing as he's been a member of the family for sooo long they will never consider selling him. Instead they've put him on loan...the only condition is that it has to be a loan from home OR a very well approved place (fair enough).
Their loan terms (aside from staying at home) are better than ANY. The owner still pays ALL bill, livery, shoeing, feed, insurannce, supplements, you name it. Plus she wouldn't dream of interfering...in fact she works in London during the week herself so is not there to interfere. In exchange the loaner gets a 100% cost free dream horse who they can do whatever they like with, compete, hack, whatever, you name it without ANY of the costs involved and without and owner who interferes.
My problem thus is this....why oh why then is it that every time she has loaned him to someone they've ended up taking the piss. Take the current girl for instance...22 yrs old (so not a kid)...she's got him on loan now and the problem is this...she's turning up maybe 3 times a week (he's living out) and when she doesn't come instead just sends me a txt assuming that I will feed him, etc...don't get me wrong I will as I am there doing my youngster anyway. In those 3 days she's ridden maybe twice. Last weekend, having been ridden twice in that week alone, she hacked him over to a local show, jumped in 2 classes and stayed at the show sitting on his back for 6 hours!!!! Never offered him water once and next day he had big sore on his jaw where he'd been grazing in that time with his grackle done up tight and not loosened off.
The days she does come up she rarely checks or gives him water and to top it off the night before the show was going to keep him in stable overnight even though she'd run out of feed and hay!!!! (I put my foot down at this an blew at her). And believe me, these are just a couple of the problems!
Lets just say her days with him are numbered, however, my point is, why is it that every person who has come to have this pony has been like this...they've got the dream pony (especially the no money part), the dream, non intefering owner, etc. etc. and still they all have taken the chronic piss.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying all loaners are like this (I know that's not true) but why then does it seem impossible to find a good one who will love and care for this lovely horse?
