Loaning a horse and passports

When I have loaned from an individual the owner keeps the passport. I loaned once from a rehab centre and was given the passport

I put one of mine on loan today and I kept the passport, another is being sold and the buyers are paying in installments and they wont get the passport until he is payed for. All the time I own the horse I have the passport

Passport should always be with the horse. When we took our pony on loan with a view to sale, we got her passport with her. We made up a simple contract stating we had not bought the pony. Kept things clear in the eyes of the law.

Absolutely. Passport MUST go with the horse, have a loan agreement signed by both parties and witnessed. keep photos taken very recently, and records of any markings, Freezemark, Microchip number and either Passport details or copy of passport.

DressageDiva - yup, that is perfect. Agreement and passport - who is paying insurance ? (I am paying for my one on loan - seems safer!) And...is it freezemarked?

Not freeze marked but micro chipped and those papers are staying with me, have now done an agreement and checked out references and everything.

Thank you for your advice. Much appreciated.
