Loaning a horse with no tack ? ? ? ?

I was originally going to sell her with tack &amp; use that money to buy tack for my new horse (I already have the new horse).
Obviously without selling her I will not get any money to buy tack for my new horse...... So ideally I would like to hold the tack back &amp; loan her tack free. If the tack goes with her, I will have <u>no</u> money to buy tack at all &amp; I then have a horse which is useless to me! (when I say no money to buy new tack, I mean no money!)

She will loaned for a short period at first, then maybe longer or maybe someone else may take her on loan. ? ?

I chose yes because I have a horse on loan....she did come with tack, but the saddle eventually stopped fitting her as she changed shape, so I bought a new one and gave the other back. Would you be happy trusting the other person buys tack that fits correctly? I think it's acceptable to loan without tack though.
 
Ideally I would rather them get tack fitted to her. As I think they will respect it better if they have bought it. Plus my tack for her is near enough brand new.

Also, her saddle has always fitted her.... in the height of fitness and when she was just hacking..... but she has done nothing for ages and her tack did fit in April ...... but I have never seen her so chubby! So the chances are this saddle will not fit any longer anyway!

When I spoke to the BHS earlier they said that she should go with tack!? But this then leaves me with pretty much no horse and an expensive pet!

Does anyone know if I can say which saddle fitter they use? Or is this not acceptable?..... As she is only going locally and I know how many 'cow boys' there are out there and my saddle fitter I have used for years with no probs at all. I am going to ask them to use the same vet &amp; farrier.
 
I don't think it is. You are expecting someone else to make a significant investment of kit for a horse that is not theirs and that they could potentially only have for a short period of time. Plus, in that position, the chances of her ending up in ill fitting/cheap tack would be far too high imo.
 
Its acceptable to loan her without tack but I personally would want her saddle to go with her if I knew it fitted her to make sure that loaners didnt just go shove any old saddle on her - but thats not to say that a loaner would do that.

Just being nosey - why dont you just sell her completly if you have zero money to buy tack ?

Have you thought about what will happen if the tack doesn't fit your new horse?! Then you will be a bit screwed either way

After previous experiences I would not send a horse out on loan with it's tack again. When my horse came back I got the saddle and bridle back but the 15 rugs, differenty types of boots, stud guard etc never came back!
 
Personally...I sent my boy on loan with everything. I wanted him to go with his saddle as I knew it fit him rather than risk them using something cheap that didn't fit, and I have it in the contract that it must be checked at least once a year (and that they are responsible for the cost of this and any necessary alterations). They damaged a couple of his rugs (well, he did!) so I've had them buy new to replace them.

My girl came on loan with everything, and will go back with everything and some!

On a slightly different note...am on the look out for a new pony to loan! Might PM you about her if that's ok?

In my loan agreement I have said that they must have the saddle fitted by a qualified saddle fitter and that it must be checked every 6 months. She is out on long term loan though, permanent. I have said that she must stick to the vet that has always dealt with her and preferably the same farrier.

If she's staying very locally then I guess you could say which saddler they use, but if you're putting her out on loan you need to know when to take a step back. You don't need all of those caveats and instructions on it, just be really careful about where she's going. I was like that when my boy first went but the loaners are fabulous and I now don't need any of the "you must use so and so", "you must not do X"....
 
I got my first horse on loan (with a view to buy) and I didn't get as much as a headcollar!

I know loan arrangements have changed these days, but I wouldn't expect to get full kit for a loan horse. If I did, I would probably want to buy my own stuff anyhow.

Ditto. I don't know how much you are hoping to get from selling your tack, but if itwas a lot then can't you get a cheap 2nd hand saddle fitted, and a 2nd hand bridle from ebay isn't going to set you back the earth. The important thing is surely that you don't want this horse to be put in ill fitting tack?

As a potential loaner I would be very put off if a horse came with no tack.
