Loaning a horse

Personally, I'd always prefer to find something via word of mouth. Being cynical (and old!) I've known too many people who've taken horses on "long term" loan from adverts, invested alot of money and emotion sorting out schooling and health issues only to have the horse taken back because what the owners actually wanted was some mug to give the animal a temporary home whilst they move home or the children were at uni etc, etc. I did mention I was cynical didn't I?

Either that or they offer it to you for a period, let's say a year, so you completely reschool it, then they take it back and sell it for a mint. I have to agree with you that being cynical is the best way!

Hang on a minute - not all loans are like that! We had a mare on loan, fell in love with her and ultimately bought her. I know lots of people who have loaned or are loaning currently with no problems at all.

Stabletalk.co.uk often have horses for loan. There's another site called somethinng like horsetoloan - not sure if co.uk or .com though.

Sorry, should also have said that a friend of mine advertised locally for a horse to loan and now has a stunning Quarter Horse. He's been with her for 12 months and the owners have just agreed a 12 month extension.

So might be worth trying placing a wanted ad locally too.

Good luck!

Possibly P!

You are right ISH-Mad, not all loans are like that - I've had some very successful ones myself - but I think it does pay to remember that in the majority of cases the loan is offered more for the benefit of the owner than the loaner.

Both of my horses started off as loan horses.

Beau iI bought after a few months because his owner started getting funny about things once he started looking well, he was v skinny when we got him, luckily it was written into my agreement the price I would buy him for,and that I had the first refusal to buy him, otherwise I think she would have had him back, after all the had work I had put,and sold him for much more!

I have had two ponies on loan a 13 2 who had to go back as my daughter outgrew him and we still have the welsh cob 14 2 for my daughter ,they are doing so well together the owner has told us we can keep her for as long as we want .She has bought her a new saddle as her old one didnt fit due to a change of shape now she is being ridden daily but I have paid for everything else.I found the latest horse on ad trader just put in your postcode and horse loans and they all come up with the distance from your code.
We asked to buy her but the owner declined she thinks my daughter will want to move on in another couple of years to something bigger. We have agreed that she can stay at the same yard indefinitely I am happy to oversee if another loanee is required.I have a great relationship with the owner so would recommend it.

I loaned my horse out when pregnant, short term only, on Horsemart and literally had over a hundred callers .... of which, I did find a suitable loaner.

I have a horse on loan and found him on horsequest.co.uk - they have quite a lot in the loans section. I think I have been lucky with my loan so far, the best advice I can give is to make sure you get a proper signed loan agreement that protects you as well as the owner.
