im currently full loaning a horse i plan to do BSJA on and after talking to a friend, they said if they were loaning, they would expect to have the passport. in my experience, when i have loaned my horses out, i have never given the passport with them in fear of the new loan owner selling my horse from underneath me. i know i will be needing the passport for BSJA registration and classes etc, and i also have been told of a rule which states when your transporting a horse in a lorry, you must have its passport on board to prove the horses identity and things. also if for some reason the horse needs to go to Newmarket horse hospital, i will need the passport at hand and what happens if i cant get into contact with owner?

help please?

You need the passport for transport, vaccinations etc.
Basically, you need the passport, end of!
If the owner is worried about the horse being sold on, perhaps suggest you both signing a loan agreement?

Passports should be kept with the horse. I keep my passports at home but really they should be at the yard where the horses live.

I have a horse on loan and I do have his passport because I take him out and about in the trailer. If you are stopped and checked, police will expect you to have passports for the horses you are transporting. I beleive that if you don't then you have something like 3 hours to produce the passport at a police station - bit of a bummer if you are on your way to an event !!

The lady who owns my horse had not qualms about letting me have his passport. I guess it depends how well you trust the person who has your horse on loan?

It is essential that the Passport - not a photocopy - goes with the horse.

The loaner of my horse has the passport. They need it for competing and for keeping the vaccination record updated.

If I couldn't trust them with the passport, I wouldn't trust them with the horse.

Yes definately passport should be with you whilst you have care of the horse, her name will remain on it as the owner and she can take a copy.

My horse's passport went with him when he went out on loan, but I have kept a photocopy. He's freezebranded and my name is still registered as the owner.

Precisely. If the loaner were a dodgy person, she could get the horse passported with a new authority and sell it on. The passport really does need to stay with the horse, for transporting it, vaccinations, etc.

Get your horse freeze-marked and microchipped before loaning it out. Get proof of ID from the loaner; i gave Ella's owner a copy of my passport and my council tax bill, so she knows i am a real person and i have a real address. Go and check the yard at which your loaner intends to keep the horse, and if at all possible, do a surprise visit there a couple of weeks later. I don't think any genuine loaner would mind you turning up to say hello (I wouldnt, anyway).
