Hi, do you think there would be any interest in me loaning my dressage horse? He is currently on sales livery (I dont really want to sell him but due to the HUGE vets bill of my other horse I cant keep the two) but after visiting him doesnt seem to be doing any work or being turned out and he just looks depressed. I cant leave him there but want him to go quickly. He has done some small eventing and would go to medium by the end of the year with the right rider so I dont want to let him go to waste. Is there a call for this type of horse for loan or should I just hold on and try to sell him. I have called a few people who have advertised for loan but they all seem to want bombproof hacks!!
Any ideas would be much appreciated, thanks

If he is that good, then I would be grasping and put him up for lease! assuming he has some competition history behind him?

Or if you do want to sell, my yard does sales livery - and the horses ARE turned out and worked - and if you want, the horse can be competed too. Or another option, if he has no history (and you can afford it) get your horse competed to give it a record.

PM if you want more info or details but you seem to have a few options so don't worry!

I think people would bite your hand off to take him! Pop a post on the BD website or advertise in the wanted section of somewhere like Horsequest and you will be inundated with callers.

As Luci07 said, plenty of good sales liveries around if you do decide to sell.

Problem is, he isn't looking great at the moment and is so unfit from being at sales livery. He is normally quite a big chap and at the moment he looks like an eventer, but is so unfit from being locked in a stable that it would be hard for people to ride him and realise his potential. I tried to explain to a lady that came to see him that it wouldnt take much to get him back to what he was as hes just not strong enough to work hard for someone, but its hard to make someone believe you if they dont know you!

I cant really afford to put him on sales livery somewhere else again (it really has cost me a fortune so far). He has competed unaffiliated, I didnt affiliate him as I like them to be really established first. Plus my other horse seems to be a professional at hurting himself so affording it was a nightmare!

I'm sure you'd find someone to see past that and look at what he could be like.

Coulde you not ride him to get him fit or get a sharer for him or someone to just go and ride him 3 days a week? If he's not being ridden where he is and you're paying for it then I'd cut my losses, find cheap grass livery for him and someone to exercise him for you a few days a week til he's fit enough to loan.

I do think if you explained he's been out of work for a while etc to someone they'd be willing to take him on if they could see potential

Yes there are people out there who would want him I think although its blooming hard to find the right loaner for these more talented types. I'm desperate to loan my lad out and have loads of viewings from people who sound perfect on the phone and then get here and literally can't ride one side of him! Its pretty stressful!

Unfortunately the sales livery is at the opposite end of the country to me at the moment. He went out on loan to someone I knew who was going to buy him but due to a divorce she had to give him up. My other horse is turned out in the south west and I am living in the city centre so it isnt easy for me to get anywhere near fields let alone stables, otherwise of course I would have him straight out of there! I will advertise him and see what happens, just hope I dont get lots of timewasters. I wanted to see if there was a call for loaning as not many people seem to be advertising for this type of horse.

Vizslak: this is what I am worried about, I have had a lady who tried to tell me about what horses are worth and how talented he was. When it came down to it she couldnt even get the horse to canter!

Yes its hard, in reality there are far more people that think they can ride to a certain level than there are that are actually capable. Those that are capable tend to not need a horse on loan, although I can't see rhyme or reason to that phenomenon! He will get intrest because not many advertise this type for loan they normally sell them because they are worth money. If he's easy enough you will find the right person, mine is a stupidly talented and therefore not so easy type, I hope you have more luck than me! It drives me nuts as I am no amazing rider by any stretch and I ride him fine, there are so many people far more talented than me that would love him and ride him better than me so why do I get the bloomin numpties!
