Just asking for opinions really! Might be long. More a rambling really.
Is there a 'market' for people wanting loan horses/ponies, to bring on?
Now I'm not on about blank 3 or 4 year old canvasses that you see going up 'for loan for two years' [just in time for said horse or pony to be backed and schooled on, for free, ironically enough
....]
I'm on about say, a nice little fun young pony who has done a bit of everything...but is still green and does need bringing on still, but more bringing on in the more technical stuff - like jumping [say, has done basic 2ft6ish jumping and polework - but not grids, or fillers, or the 'next stage' type jumping stuff] or maybe canter work needing a bit of finishing off etc.
And is sensitive off the aids. Not in anyway bad or anything like that....far from it as he's lovely well mannered lad.
He just isn't one you use much leg on and does not need 'pony club kicks' or flapping otherwise he'll do what he's being asked to [Aka - accelerate!]...just a quiet, competant rider who will use their seat, sit quietly and not interfere. Which...isn't that much to ask surely?!
Been advertised for a couple of weeks now [on paid for 'obvious' horse sites, pony club etc] and just not having any luck with the people replying to him.
Advert says pretty much as he is, states is NOT a riding school pony and does not need kicks, is safe but is sensitive and a bit green/quiet rider needed, no novices, etc etc. All the normal. Owner honest as anything....but just cannot get the right people replying to him? All out of a riding school mostly which all ended less than ideal, apart from one kid who was brilliant on him and was flying over 2ft9's and not phased by him...but unfortunately he was just not quite up to the jumping yet that they'd need him for [as he's not done much in the way of fillers, courses, xc etc and they were doing rallies and stuff and wanting to go out and do it straight away...which is fair enough as she was a brilliant little rider!]
I just don't get it. Pony is a very nice pony and will be a brilliant little buzzy all rounder - would be fab for schooling, coloured showing, jumping, hunting....anything really! If someone just does the finishing off and puts a bit of work into him....and it's pretty much a life long loan, minimum of 3 years or so, etc and the owner doesn't want him back or anything like that. There's not a LOT of work to put into him, as he's a fairly easy going chappy...but he's a just a typical buzzy type who likes to get on with the job!
Owner at a loss of what to do with him now and getting worried about not finding anyone for him.
So is there a market for loan horses, say like this one, anymore? If so, what websites etc best for it do you find?
Or are only complete saints considered to loan now...
