do you ask for references when you loan horses out? and if so what would be an appropriate reference to ask for?

I didn't specifically ask but in the first case, I met with the Master of their hunt and in the second, met their riding instructor. Not sure refs really mean much though as the first lot turned out to be a total disaster and second were great.

yeah well my TB went on loan on tuesday...he's back today because she turned out to be a complete liar  and i think i am lucky to have my horse back in one piece...i thought i'd done my homework but clearly not well enough, hence why i thought i could ask for refs next time- i guess i could ask to meet their instructor etc!?

I now own my horse but in the past have loaned. I was more than happy for people to ask for references. I'm lucky to have been head girl on a show yard so have that ref along with my current yard owner and vet. I don't have an instructor so that wasn't appropriate for me. Hope you're boy is ok and can be sorted with time.

Ref from riding instructor and yard owner, also maybe vet or farrier as well. Thats what some of the horse charitys ask for.

I'd ask for those and if loaner was unhappy to supply them I'd begin to smell a rat. We've had successful loans and unsuccessful ones but it is best to do your homework thoroughly no matter how lovely the people seem.
