Loaning horses?

Since polo pony and I have parted ways I am now looking for a horse again.

Someone has offered me two horses on loan and I am due to speak to the woman this week and find out about them. She has offered me them for the summer until I find something else, she says she will pay all costs.

But what questions do I need to ask? I've only ever had a horse on trial before, not loan. What do I need to find out?

Thats not really a loan but if she is genuine its a good deal!

Make sure they are insured, you get rider insurance.
Fine out exactly how much she expects you to do day to day.

Then normal general ridden work, what they have done how safe etc.

Get a contract!

i would tyr and find someone that had had a loan agreement, there must be loads of ppl on here that can give you some pointers etc, what are you looking for long term? just a loan or to buy something else, will these ponies be suitable for you in the long term??

Sounds like a promising start if the lady has offered to pay all costs, however, please do a proper loan agreement, it really does make it easier. I have my horse on loan to the best loanee in the world, but the fact we did a loan agreement makes it so much easier to resolve those niggly little things that come up (ie vets fees if its the loanees fault, who pays if numnahs get worn out, etc, etc).

Secondly, make sure you will enjoy the horses.

Thirdly - and very importantly - see what the lady is looking for from you. Would she ideally like the horses back at the end of the Summer so she can sell/loan on more easily/hunt? None of it is bad, but really helps to know from the outset and there definitely will be something she would ideally like. For example, if she would like the horses to learn to jump, she may want to fund the odd lesson/be involved if you can't afford to. It also gives you something to work to.

Lucky you, I have been looking for a loan WVTB since I lost my aged mare and absolutely nothing in my area.
I haven't had one on loan before but have put 2 out on loan in the past. My old girl was my son's last pony and luckily big enough for me to ride so we had her for 17 yrs.
There are several things you need to be aware of;
Are they insured, vet fees, loss of use, theft and public liability,who pays insurance while they are on loan. Make sure your personal insurance covers you for riding a loan horse.
Do they have any special requirements in the way of feed, supplements, stable routine etc.
What can you do with them, some loaners do not want their animals to be heavily competed for one reason or another, whilst others are looking to have an unschooled animal produced for them. Make sure you know what you are getting.
It is a good idea to have a written contract that you can both work out between yourselves so that you both know exactly where you stand should anything unforseen happen.

Hi over the last few years ive loaned a couple of horses and am currently in the process of possibly giving one up. Similiar story woman offered to pay me to look after and break and school her youngster, i got this horse in october and for the first few months she was fine didnt hear a peep, then wanted to ride her bit more often as missed riding has got herself a new horse and is now refusing to pay anything for the one i am loaning, but this was not the agreement and is not willing to sell or contribute in any way. Unlike all my other horses ive loaned we dont have a contract. BIG MISTAKE!! please make sure you get a written contract you may not think youll need one but trust me one day you will. You can download a standard loan agreement contract from british riding club website and tweek to meet your needs. do this even if she does offer to pay as one day she could easily refuse and you be left to pay everything. Just cover your back not everyone in the equestrian world has the horses best interest at heart!!
