It is sad to see that there are so many horse owners against loaning out horses. Whilst I must agree that there are many horror stories out there it must be said that there must be just as many happy stories too and that these are very much overlooked.

I am lucky enough to have 2 horses on permanent loan. One came via a friend over 4 years ago when they were no longer able to keep him The other was advertised locally over 3 years ago. This one had previously been out on loan and was your typical horror story, very underweight, neglected feet, teeth in fact the whole works. I decided to take her on as I felt that once she had recovered she would be just what I was looking for. It took well over a year to get her back to full health and yes she is what I imagined she would be. Her owner visits from time to time, the other owner has complete faith in my capabilities and has only visited a couple of times. Both owners are more than happy with their horses condition and stabling arrangements. We keep in touch via FB and e-mails regularly.

Neither horse wants for anything, they owe me nothing but I owe them everything!

I'm the same as you. 2 on loan. 1 set of owners don't bother with us at all and the other owner pops in from time to time and texts sometimes. I'm greatful that people trust me enough to look after their horse.
I am hoping to buy one of my loan horses soon though.

I would never loan my horse out again just can't trust anyone these days well the people I end up meeting. Wish there was genuine people out there like yourselves

I have mine on loan at present and he is getting the full works shoe came off due to feet being overgrown in 1st week of me having him, called farrier last night, he comes tonight.
next will be all tack checked and changed if neccesary to his welfare and education.
Going to have teeth done next, you name it he is getting it.

I look after any animal to the best of my ability and believe me they all want for nothing.
There are lots of horror stories about, but again there are the honest genuine ones like OP and myself amongst others that do look after their horses, the owner will pop up every now and then too which is fine by me.

I am going to buy this lad though so I am going to get a nicer saddle etc , he needs to loose weight and tone before I look at getting one, but its a tough one as the saddle he has doesn't fit well at all, blocks his shoulders, I don't feel comfy in it either, so again this is being sorted.

I know that the owner knows how well looked after he is and will be kept.

Shame for the other stories though :(

I have my boy on full loan and have full loaned as well as owned previously too.

My boy wants for nothing, he was shod 4 days after I got him, physio out to check back etc 2 weeks after he arrived, saddler to check saddle, new saddle, dentist to check teeth. He's just had his annual vaccs.

He gets treated no different from horses that I have owned. Owner is happy (well that's what she tells me :D) and has asked if I will buy him which I am going to do.

He's lost all the weight he came with, has fittened up. Have competed him twice since I've had him (4 months) and we've been placed everytime, in fact we've won both times with an increase in scores. He is coming on so much in the school and is so much more balanced than he was, his outline is more consistent and he has built up a lot of muscle on his back end that even my non horsey OH who hadn't seen him for 6 weeks noticed on Mon evening.

I honestly do not get all these horror loan stories, where do you find these people?!

I've got 2 on loan at the moment.

Charlie is my 18yo PBA and was obese when we got him and out of work for 9 months, brought him back into work and now is as fit as he possibly could be :) I've had minimal contact with owner so far but she's happy to have him back whenever and I know he has a loving home with them

Darcy is my 6yo thoroughbred mare, ex-racer, she was up for sale but her owner contacted me and said she'd rather loan her out than sell her so I have her on a three year loan until i go to uni :) She texts me and visits from time to time, lovely lady and i run everything past her so she's still a part of Darcy's life :) she's been fantastic.

I would treat any horse exactly the same whether i have bought it or loan it. At the end of the day, you pay all the bills like you would if you had bought it and you love them just the same. Yes I admit their are horror stories from loans but aren't their just as many with sold horses? Only you can't get your horse back?

having owned for many years, i now loan a lovely 5 yr old spotty, she has been with me about 6 weeks , in that time she has had her feet done, back done, dentist is booked for next week, i have bought her rugs and a new bridle [ it was a bargain & i wanted it]
she is having regular schooling sessions with a good RI and i will be competing at a low level once she is ready.
I am no longer in a position to buy and am extremely grateful that someone trusts me with their horse and i wouldn't dream of not treating her as i would any horse or pony i have ever owned

im very happy to say i too have had several horses on loan over the years and they have wanted for nothing. they have been treated with the same care and love as mine ,farrier teeth vet physio, saddler ,supplements, diet-what ever was needed -one owner im still very good friends with even tho i dont have their horses any more, and another owner visited frequently until they passed away and when the horse was seriously ill i held his head when he was PTS. so there are excellent people out there who will give your horse the same care they always have had. we always want to let everyone know about all the bad experiences (which is as it should be) but dont forget there are plenty of good loaners too.:)

If you find any good loaners who would like a companion in lancashire area then pm :-) need to find my shetland a new home or free to good home just want him happy and my other horses bully him too much to the point of injuries so he is on a temp loan at the mo
