Loaning issues, your opinions needed please:

Hi there,

My mare is possibly going to be loaned out I will obviously be sending her with her tack... but then what??? What would you do regarding rugs and boots, I have a good LW rug that I would send her with but her MW is trashed so she would need a new one in
I think if you loan a horse you should provide everything to go with it, but what would you do, if she is on full loan, should I buy it or should that be the responsibility of her loaner???

I was thinking saddle, bridle, 1x LW, 1 x MW, 1 X HW and 1 x Stable rug. However, what about boots and stuff? I could use these with my other girl so am reluctant to let those go with her. Is it reasonable to expect the new loaner to provide such things as brushing boots, and travel boots if needed? Also what happens if a rug is trashed, should I replace it or is that the loaner’s responsibility whilst she is in her care???? And do you think I should get a MW to send with her so she has a full set?

If you are an owner who loans: how do you play these things???

If you are a Loaner: what would you expect, on the one hand I would probably go out and buy all new rugs and boots etc for my horsey anyway regardless of being provided with them.

One of mine is out on loan and she went with nothing as this is what we agreed. I specified in the contract that the saddle had to be fitted by a qualified saddler etc and have regular checks. She is a young horse so will be changing regularly.
I would say to make sure that anything you send is put into the contract and that you want it returning in a similar state or replacing.
When someone takes on a loan horse imo they take on the cost of ownership which includes replacing rugs etc as and when is needed. if you have approriate tack and rugs then send them but detail them (my loanee didn't want anything as she wanted to spoil her afresh

You aren't sending the passport with the horse are you?

We have just loaned a lovely horse following the long term rest of our TB. He came with everything but to be honest I personally would have rathered he came with just tack as I am worried about the items getting stolen we have had a few burglaries in the area, but I guess we can just replace anything that goes.

On the flip side I guess you may not be able to afford to buy all the stuff that goes with the equines and if you were only loaning for a short time would not want to be left with everything you had bought at the end.

When i had my old mare on loan i was given all the rugs, her tack and boots.
The understanding was if the rugs/boots etc got trashed then I would replace them since she was my "responsibility" now. It was also my responsibility to organise my own saddle fittings, back checks and teeth.
Just make sure if you're girl does go out on loan you have a contract with the loanee about vets bills, if they want to return how much notice they have to give you and tack etc.

Personally if you want your loaned horse to wear rugs/boots etc then I would send them with them......... I would also stipulate in the loan contract that anything trashed would be whoever's responsibility.... and if the loaner buys the new things then they obviously remain with them when the horse is returned.
 
Thank you all, I suppose the particulars regarding what I provide with her will have to be discussed with the Loaner. I have a comprehensive agreement that I am currently tweaking to suit this situation, it includes pretty much everything including the kitchen sink!!!!

Well this is the other quandry I find myself in. I understand that passports should stay with the horse at all times, and since she will be transporting her to shows, I know I should. But having said that I am of course reluctant to do so in light of the horror stories I hear. What is the general feeling on this?????

it is all so confusing, would a photocopy of the particulars suffice do you think????
 
No, you keep a photocopy but your loaner needs the passport. Legally the passport goes with the keeper of the horse. She can't transport legally without the original document.
 
didn't think about that! I think then that you should send the passport but contact the body who issued the passport and inform them that the horse hasn't been sold and it is on loan and that should any request for change of ownership be made that they should contact you on contact details you have supplied?

I will have to give my loanee the passport and contact he association she is registered with.
 
My horse thats on loan went off with a set of everything Eg all tack / numnahs, diff weight stable and NZ rugs, cooler, brushing + travel boots, headcollar etc. The deal is when they wear out loaner replaces with similar. I don't really expect the rugs to last for ever and am not too fussed about him not coming back with a full set but it is all noted in our agreement.
 
Silverbreeze has got a point. Elsewhere there is a discussion about a stole passport, loaner was able to change it into her own name without the real owner being contacted by the agency. This whole passport thing is a farce.
 
The passport has to stay with the horse, so you need to give it to the loaner. She'll need it for travel, vaccinations, etc. To be honest, if you don't trust her with the passport, do you really trust her with the horse?

When i took my girl on loan, i gave her owner a copy of my council tax bill, and a copy of my passport, so she had some proof of who i was. She also came to visit my yard, and has been to visit my new yard as well.

The loan agreement included a list of all the items that the owner sent with the horse, which would have to be either returned or replaced with equivalents if they wore out. My horse came with one bridle, one headcollar, a cooler, two stable rugs and a turnout. Oh, and her travel boots. That was it. I have bought her a few more things (saddle and a couple of rugs) and if the worst came to the worst and she had to go home, the saddle and rugs would be staying with me.
 
mine came with everything, but to be honest, i mainly use my own stuff with him because i dont want to damage his and i just prefer my own kit (its a bit better quality - i'm not a snob honest!). I think your idea with the rugs is a good one, i have ended up with more rugs then i know what to do with! make sure you send a detailed list of everything you are sending with the horse though and include it as part of your contract that it all needs to be returned in the same state ie. if you send the rugs cleaned, you expect them to come back clean etc.

If i was loaning, i would probably send with one set of boots - just so i know there is a set avliable.
 
Hattie came with all her tack and rugs, even her grooming kit, boots, travelling outfit and even a bag of feed! Her owner gave me the passport as well as my vet doesn't give vaccination cards, they only stamp the passport.

I ended up giving her saddle back though when it turned out that it no longer fitted her so her owner could sell it on.
 
God isn't it a mine field!!! Trundle it isn't a case of me thinking that the person who will loan her is dodgy, she is my baby and we all know that ANYTHING can happen, I just want to take every precaution I can to ensure she is safe. I like the idea of a council tax bill, I already know where she works, and would of course visit the yard she was going to. She is my most prized posession, a very important part of my world and I want to ensure that I have absolutley everything I can covered.

Ask the loaner for a utility bill to confirm address and ideally a copy of their driving licence or passport - i think thats perfectly reasonable !

Definitely keep a copy of the passport for yourself - that way you have proof of how it looked when you handed it over, if you see what i mean. Is your horse freeze-marked and microchipped? Again, just useful things to prove identity. You don't have to hand over the freezemarking or micro-chipping paperwork to the loaner, and in fact, it would be sensible not to.
 
I have the Welsh on loan, everthing she has I have access to in our tackroom and can use what ever I like, obviously I don't take the mick, I only use what I need, which is a few rugs and her saddle and bridle, I use all my own grooming products on her and if I needed anything else I'd just buy it.

I think if your loaning a horse out then it should come with the full wardrobe, why not, if it belongs to that horse. However spares and damaged rugs should be paid for by
the person taking the horse on loan, give and take really.

Our first loan pony came with just a headcollar. Our second loan pony came with everthing but the kitchen sink and I wondered where the heck I'd keep all of his belongings tbh. Our current loan pony came with saddle, bridle, headcollar and a couple of turnout rugs. I asked the owner if he had any brushing boots for lunging and she gave me those. His saddle is not in great condition so I'll be getting one for him through a qualified saddle fitter but will obviously retain this if he goes back. I did also buy him a set of travel boots for his journey to us. I do have other horses and so feel that the current situation is about right as I already have lots of leadropes/buckets/brushes etc
