loaning out a horse-when it goes wrong

Cut a long story short- my horse is out on loan whilst I am at university, girl took him and loved him ans she rang everyday to let me know how he was doing all fine. I popped up to see him as soon as I could afford to travel back and he was skinny hadnt been ridden in ages and the stable was foul. I was furious but I gave her another chance and thought everyone can have a bad day. Popped up again to ride and was told on arrival he had lost a shoe, found this strange as he had lost one about 2/3 weeks previous i asked questions etc and found it was the same shoe they were waiting for the farrier to get back to them! hah! finally the only condition of the loan i was adamant about was he has to be in every night well rugged up against the cold as hes sensitive! my mum went to check and reports from neighbours say he has been living out with only a thin rug on and sometimes none!! im furious so have decided to take him to university with me! dont worry i have plenty of time etc for him and can afford it ive done my finances! However and heres the problem I cant take him with me until the third week of jan when a stable is free for me to take on the livery yard. what do i do until then? im at my wits end and stressed to hell with the situation. sorry short post turned into a long one!! wine and lots of it!! thankyou for any help
 
I assume you've come home from uni for now? Could you ask at wherever you used to keep him if you could pay for him just to stay there temporarily.
 
Can you not put him at another yard just for the 3 weeks if they agree to it? Although that means moving him twice, he'll probably still be happier than being out in the field freezing cold.
 
Have you a friend who could have him for a while? If you ask around, get your mum to go to the local feed store, chat to the assistants and study the adverts for liveries I expect there will be SOMEWHERE you could have him for a short time.

If you are terminating the loan at short notice it really would be best if you go and get him straight away.
 
thats the plan at the moment the local yards to us have no room, and im going back to uni next week on boxing day to sort his stable down there out..i have to order bedding etc. I just dont know whether its better to leave him where he is for now although he is cold hes settled and he doesnt travel at all well, than move him somewhere different and unsettle him again. ahh its tough! i think i will move him elsewhere and pray he settles quickly. not what i needed on top of everything else right now
 
is there a yard owner at the place were he is now..if so maybe you could put him on full livery with her just for the 3 weeks. at least then you will have a duty of care from the yard owner, and you can spacify what you want done
 
Where are you at uni (if you dont mind me asking!) pls PM if you prefer cause i will forget to check back - there is a reason for the q!

ditto, before anything happens, you can never be too sure now you have ended the agreement with the person that had him on loan, besides if the YO (if your horse was on a livery yard) should of made sure the girl was tending to the horse correctly. Hope things work out.

Move him the weather is getting worse and colder. If they know you're ending the loan they may not see to your horse at all.

Is there a livery yard near your Uni that could take him on full livery until the other one is ready?

i have a horse on loan, and would not dream of mistreating him or going against the owners wishes with re. to rugging him up ect.
i consider myself to be a good loaner, but a lot of people wont put their horses out on loan because of people like this girl! get the horse moved (i wouldnt even give notice) and take pics of the horse as he stands now, then if she trys to kick a fuss up you have evidence that he was mistreated and she wont have a leg to stand on.
also if you ever consider loaning again, take pics when the horse goes to its new home, this way you have proof of cruelty, which this is cruelty.
i would also report the girl to the RSPCA and welfare centres, she should not be allowed another loan horse!

thankyou everyone for help and kind words..ive been to sort things out today with the girl and she couldnt see what she had done wrong. hes moving tomorrow or saturday at latest to a friends farm, then coming on his holidays with me to uni! thankyou x
