Does anyone have experience of this? or know about what happends before?
I have applied to loan a shetland pony to act as a companion to my horse and thought this would be better to get one from a charity rather than buy or loan privately.
Thanks in advance

My horse is from HAPPA and I've had her 5 years. I think most of the charities have a pretty standard procedure - your application will be assessed and they will see what they have available - generally companions are easier to come by than rideable animals.

You will probably have a home check to make sure your faclilties are OK - don't worry about it, for me, they checked the fencing was safe, turnout was adequate and that I had a stable to use in the winter. You will probably have to pay a fee when you first take the pony. I also have an annual subscription to pay for mine, but if you have one for a companion it should be pretty minimal.

Most charities also do an annual or 6 monthly follow up check, just to make sure everything is OK, teeth/feet/worming/jabs etc are up to date. Easy peasy.

Good on you for choosing to help out a charity. Hope you find a nice pony.

I have no worries that my mare wont like him or her she likes everything apart from being alone!

I tried to get a companion pony from the RSPCA, filled in the form but heard nothing back. Tried calling them a couple of times over 3 months, everytime they said that it all looked promising and I should wait to hear back...eventually I just bought a pony, they never got back to me.

I have tried a few places but if you rent your land and stables (or are at livery) they wont loan a pony out which I think is a shame, you have to actually own your grazing

Might not be like that elsewhere though

WelshD - I haven't heard that, blimey I rent a field but have been here 5 years. I've looked at, world horse welfare and RSPCA.

That's not the same for all charities though - so don't get too despondent (my mare is on livery and it was never a problem).

I tried the blue cross. they were brilliant, but by the time they had something sutible for me, I'd actually already bought a horse. They were great though. very helpful and kept me in the loop.

I've got a Blue Cross horse, they were really good to deal with so I've now got a proper little gem for the bargain price of £350!
