Hello - I currently part loan my horse and oversee the insurance. If I were to put my horse on full loan, should I still maintain the insurance or expect the loanee to take this over? Can I/should I insure for loss of horse only? and should I keep up third party cover? Thanks!

I had it im my contract with woman who loaned my horse that she had full insurance cover and that a copy had to be sent to me as proof.

Full loan she takes on the responsibilities with the horse so insurance should be her cover

When my horse was loan the policy remained in my name but the person loaning the horse paid the premiums.

ditto this when we had a horse on loan insurance was in owners name and we paid the premium. Insurance firm were told all facts about who had horse on loan and where kept etc.

my horse is out on loan and I take out the cover and the loanee sends me a cheque to cover the cost- the insurance company are aware he is on loan and she can ring them direct in case of emergency but all money will be paid to me in case of accident/death.

I may be unusual but I pay the insurance, it is with Pet Plan but with a £500 excess. The loanee is technically responsible for vet fees upto the £500 point .... but I keep a little fund so I wouldn't resent paying this as well. I also pay for twice yearly teeth checks.

I just feel that I owe it to the horse to make sure these things are really well looked after and also I feel it gives me the 'right' to interfere a bit with the horse care if I am still covering some of the bills??

I think the owner should definitely keep the insurance in their name and take the money for the insurance from the person loaning the horse. If god forbid anything happens to the horse you won't have to worry about the insurance not being valid. There have been cases where people have loaned there horse out for it to be injured and returned, with no insurance in place as was supposed to be on the loaners end. I just don't think it is worth the risk.
