Looking at loaning out my granddaughters 12.2hh pony. I've had several people message. They've been happy enough when I've asked what they intend to use him for but when I ask what experience the parents have got with horses they never message back. Am I wrong to ask this question. I feel that as he is a child's pony I would expect adult supervision. What is everyone's thoughts.

Not wrong at all to ask- you need to make as sure as you can that the pony’s needs will be met and he’ll be safe. I’d be worried if you didn’t ask! Placing your pony out on loan is a big risk, you need to minimise that by vetting applicants thoroughly. I’m dreading when my son outgrows his pony and I have to try to find a loaner!

Depending on whether for lead-rein/ first ridden you could ask who their instructor would be and where they plan on stabling. Not saying that any specific answers would be pass or fail, but it shows they’ve thought about it and demonstrates that you mean business.

Not wrong at all. My mum didn't know the front end of a horse from the back, when the time came to look for my first pony (I was 11) she made sure we had a space on a good reputable yard with YO to supervise the care of the pony and was up front with the fact that she knew nothing but we had a good set up in place and it all worked out well. I wouldn't loan a pony to an inexperienced home unless they had a similar arrangement in place.
