This is a subject that has come up and I just wondered if anyone has had any experience of this in terms of what is involved & potential cost.

Any pitfalls & questions I need to ask ?

Many thanks

You need to know how much to pay each week.
How many hours riding you will get.
How much stable work will you have to do.
Is insurance included?
Can you take the pony out to shows if you want?
Can you have an instructor to give you lessons?
Can you take the pony for a hack by yourself?

I would want to know how much work the horse will be doing when not with you. I have seen riding schools (2 different ones) loan ponies but also keep them for use in lessons. Basically at one place they said the loaner could have the pony Sat afternoon, all day Sun and one evening in the week. Sadly the pony did 2 and a half hours of lessons Sat morning and some at lunchtime on the weekday that it was "free" in the evening. This meant the only day off it got was Sunday - so basically the pony was simply worked harder than previously which seemed unfair to me - also it was knackered so not much use for loaning!
