We have two minis, which daughter no longer shows, we dont want to sell them as had them since babies but happy for them to go to permanent loan home, just want to guarantee their future really.

Life has no guarantees, however....want to be as careful as possible...

Lady quite local to us is interested in loaning the boys, however she has not had horses before, but happy to receive guidance from us. The bit that is worrying me is she has 6 kids and sounds like she wants to keep them in her extremely large garden/field that surrounds her house...

I have explained that they are likely to go on the ransack if they have access to bins, cupboards etc etc although perimiter fencing is very large and solid, very secure....

Not sure whether its sitting right with me at the moment.....my gut is saying no, more hassle than it is worth, my brain is saying yes they will have fun and have the attention they need!

Also wondered what things people are doing currently to ensure people are who they say they are and to avoid them being sold on, stolen etc etc.........they cannot provide horsey refs as not had them before!

.........the minis are well handled, gelded and reasonably polite!!

Thanks for reading and mint imperials with expresso if you got this far...:D

Go with your gut.

Absolutely no offense intended but are they really so much trouble to keep at home?

If you want them to be doing something perhaps consider having them broken to drive and finding a driving home for them, or finding a showing home for them. No way would I put my mini out where it looked like he would be having a huge (to them a quarter acre is big!) grassy acreage, if yours are anything like mine, they balloon just sniffing fresh grass.

Its really difficult. I loaned 2 minis as companions and am mortified to say that one of them ended up depressed (was only 8 and had a really competitive life) and laminitic. I've had horses for 30 years. It doesn't sound like she has the right experience to me and sounds like they could get hammered. Up to you but if your gut says no then I reckon game over.

We had three mini shets as our first horses / ponies and we love them to bits. They were a mare and three-week-old foal and the newly gelded sire (who was in his late teens). But we do have a paddock and stables, I've never have dreamed of putting them in a garden. I'd never part with them now, they will be with us for the rest of their lives. I'd go with your gut feeling and keep them!

Potentially the lady could give them a lovely home although it would need a lot of effort on your part. For example, does she know about laminitus? You would need to educate her on all things mini! The six children concern me - minis are rather prone to bite without firm handling. If your gut feeling is really strong then I would stay well clear, but if it's more of a niggling worry then could you have a trial period of a month?
