Loaning thoughts

What are peoples thoughts on sharers/loaning a horse But keeping it with you?

I've got a very bored horse, who (hopefully) will be back in work next spring and will then be able to do some hacking & a bit of dressage, i've previously put him on loan (he came back due to a change of circumstances) but am now thinking due to ongoing tendon issues, i'd rather he stays with me, but i'd only be riding him once a week, (time!) so am considering looking for someone to come to ours to ride him abit & entertain him,

what are peoples experiances of having sharers? is it more hastle than its worth or is it pot luck you get a good one?

I've had great experiences with three sharers. At the start I was always around to help (two of them were not very experienced with stable management, although riding school level riders) and after a while they were all happy coping on their own as well. I think the main thing is finding the right person, so it is worth advertising everywhere you can think of and then interviewing as many people as possible (some people really do not think about travelling distance, availability, suitability of the horse, etc. and will waste your time, but there are nice people out there).

Just one little thought: you will need to be quite diplomatic about offering advice and help. You know your horse best, but the sharer will need a bit of space to find her way and gain her confidence, so you will need to find a middle ground.

ive had 4 horses on loan and 2 ponies for kids i really enjoyed having them on loan, i allways respected the owners wishes, but not all people are like that, ive heard of some people trashing horses by galloping about everywhere, i was considering putting my horse up for part loan but thought if i have an accident or knack my horses legs its my fault but for someone else to do it that would leave me with no horse to ride for a while and the part sharer probably wouldnt pay for vets or pay for loan while your horse is out of work. also your horse is very valuable, if someone else injures your horse your left with the pieces. but on a posotive note there are people out there that will respect you and your horse.

I had the bay in my sig on loan for 9 months, he already had arthritis in his coffin joint and had been hobdayed. I went on to buy him after 9 months and had two great years with him before I retired him due to his intermittent lameness and increasing unpredictable behaviour. He is unfortunately leaving us on Tuesday for a pain free life in horsey heaven

I would definately consider either a sharer or a loan at present yard for my other horse. Just make sure you vet them well and have a good contract drawn up.
Sounds like your chap could give someone heaps of pleasure
