Need a new saddle at some point.... long story... but cannot really afford to buy one to go straight out on loan, plus would be a bit silly as may not fit the loaner.

Can you loan without tack and say loaner has to buy saddle?! Or is that totally wrong?!

I took my horse on loan without a saddle on the basis that i would have her fitted and buy one -but then it was loan with a view to buy and i had already decided i defiantely wanted to buy her, so it made sense. Not sure how other loaners would feel but if you were upfront, it may be ok?

I have had a few horses on loan and I would expect them to arrive with a full suit case!
Tack and Rugs - At the end of the day it's not my horse, its your horse and you should supply all the bits that go with him.

If you were doing loan with a view to buy then you should supply the saddle until they are buying him then they can buy own tack.

To be honest with my last loan horse, I brought him loads of extra things and it all went back with him.
And if things got broke they were replaced like rugs etc.

If its a permanent loan then i would be happy with to invest in the saddle, but i guess it depends on the person...... x

The loan horses I've had (including current one) have come with nothing, not even a headcollar. I think if you are planning long term loan it's not such a big deal - it would be a nightmare for the loaner if they got a saddle and then the owner took the horse back after only a short time.

Yes definately long term, the only reason I don't really want to sell as want to know that she's ok and doing well... but so long as she is happy and sound (well as she is now) they could have her forever.

Wow it's all starting to feel a bit real

My horse came on permanent loan without a saddle, and we kpt my pony's saddle when we loaned him out as a happy hacker. Think this situation is most relevant to you, as Patrick had completely broken down out hunting having done both his hind tendons in such a way the vets at Rossdales were stumped, but 2 years later of total field rest he came sound for light work. We loaned him to a lovely local lady, and he pootled off with nothing but his own sweet self and a headcollar. We loved that saddle, and it was far too nice for him (it is so lush, and fits every pony under 15.2hh we've ever owned!).

My loan horse came with only a headcollar and leadrope for travelling. He is on long term/ permanent loan and has been out of work for 6months due to a spavin. I am happy to supply anything he requires but if his owner decided to take him back, I would probably keep anything I had purchased, depending on how much it cost me. The odd rug I wouldn't worry about though.

He is more or less the same size as my own horse so most things are inter-changeable. I have a couple of saddles but haven't tried them. if they didn't fit and I had to buy one for him, then so be it.

A couple of the ponies at the RS are on loan from elsewhere and came with bridles but not saddles, or no rugs or whatever. Then again, we have so much tack floating around that we can normally find something to fit most ponies without having to fork out for a new one!

my horse went on long term loan (3 years) and didn't go with any tack or rugs.

bit cheeky i think to expect someone's valuable horse for free use and also use of expensive equipment as well!!

i suppose though its a bit like letting your house- some are furnished, some aren't

its good to hear this folks. i'm going to be selling/ loaning my TB hopefully and if he ends up going on loan there is no way his £1600 albion kontact is going with him without a sizeable deposit....i wouldn't care if it were a cheap saddle but not this one (its worth more than the horse

I wouldn't want to buy a saddle for a loan horse incase it didn't work out.....I'd ask that the owner was to pay back the full amount if the loan didn't work out....thus it's easier to send the horse off with a cheap secondhand saddle that fits!

If you're loaning a decent competition horse then yes I agree but not a happy hacker/low level RC horse......Ty went with all tack and rugs

QR The only problem i could see is that someone got a saddle for her that didnt really fit and then cause more problems. Can you not get her a 2nd hand synthetic for her? Kick on had loads of 2nd hand ones in and they would come out and fit it for you?
