Not unless I was absolutely sure that the person loaning it was capable of continuing the horse's education correctly. It really is the very most important time in their career, the breaking is the easy bit, it's the next year or so that can make or break them.

From the other side of the fence I wouldn't consider taking a youngster on loan from someone without a contract stating it was for at least 2/3 years. By the time you've got the horse going nicely, imagine how you'd feel if the owner suddenly whisked the horse away having had 'free' schooling for their horse?

I loaned an unbroken youngster as a project to break myself. I think if you can find someone you trust then it can work out well.

I loaned a recently broken horse as my first horse! He was absolutely amazing. I spent 4 months undoing all of her work (She broke him on strong sidereins so he was hard in the mouth expecting that force on his mouth, and he just fought the whole time.) I had lessons, got him going off my leg, he met trotting poles, he hacked alone and in company, he was just amazing! He did all of that at the age of 3. I think Loaning out a youngster is good IF you know that the person is right for the horse and that they will continue its education properly with lessons from the right types of people. The person I loaned the 3 year old off got a horse that did long and low in walk trot and canter, went off your leg and went on the bit in all three paces aswell as hacking and meeting trotting poles. BUT if the horse goes to the wrong person.. alot of damage can be done, that will take years of undoing!

Are you thinking of loaning your mare, the one who has been frightened by people mounting? Are you looking for someone to school her and how long are you loaning for?

No, would not.
The sort of person who I would want to bring on and school a horse would not be the sort to take one on loan, they would want paying to school it.
The only exception would be one with huge competition potentail that they would then produce and compete - i,e. a talented rider without thier own horsepower. ANd I am sure they would want commitment from me that they would get a long term use.

i wouldnt, you have put in the work so far and you never know what might happen to the younster whilst out on loan, i would only ever put either myself (make my own mistakes) or a proff on my baby horse,,, for very good reasons,, wouldnt want to risk a problem horse on return!!
