Mine was on loan to Warwickshire college while I went travelling and then to Pulborough. There was no winter t/o at Warwickshire and she got a bit miserable.
Apart from that she seemed quite happy and I was able to hack her out at weekends. I think you have to have a certain type of horse that won't get upset with some of the less experienced riders.
She was used a couple of times a day for schooling, jumping and xc. They generally like straightforward horses capable of jumping 3ft.

If you look back in the careers section I think there is a massive post about this with lots of advice/opinions some good some bad. I loaned mine out once and wouldnt do it again...
Hi, my boy has been at two different equestrian colleges, and I've had two very different experiences!
The first one in Hampshire, he was used probably twice a day and did a variety of things (sj/dressage/lunging,etc). I had to pay £50 a week livery PLUS all shoeing, vet bills, insurance etc, so it wasn't exactly cheap! I was able to ride at weekends (normally just hacked him out as he schooled nearly every day in the week) and during the week if I booked him in advance (then they'd only use him for an hour that day instead of two). The facilities were good and he was fairly happy there, there was plenty of turnout too. HOWEVER, he started to get quite sore from being ridden by different riders, in the end I had to get a chiro out to see him and was advised to rest him, so I moved him away from there.
He's currently at a different college in Somerset. He's very happy there too. (but then he's more of a big yard horse than a small yard horse, likes there to be things going on,etc.) he's used once a day tops and gets all holidays out to grass 24/7. Again the facilities are fab, and I don't pay a penny for him to be there. Theoretically I can ride whenever I want but as I now live a couple of hours away, practically that doesn't happen! He does a variety of activities there, including dressage, jumping, xc and standing still for stable management! Also he gets competed occassionally by the better riders when they run competitions on site.
If you have any other specific queries please PM me or post and I'll try to answer.

the second one sounds really nice! (the first more like a piss take!!)
i just looked on the website for myerscough which is near me but it says i have to have the horse back at xmas, easter and summer holidays- i don't min having him back over the summer but all 3 times of the year isn't exactly convenient!
I posted on the other thread about this. I did it with a TB competition horse that had some quirks and it worked out really well. They had him from about September through to May time I think one year. I didn't pay anything other than having to get his blood tested before he went. It was years ago though.
I go to warwickshire college and they only look for certain types of horses, they turn many down. They are fed well but thats about it. The students (apart from me
) dont really bother with them, just fling the tack on and away we go. Many horses learn bad habits, weaving, crib biting, pulling faces, biting etc and a lot get stressed. On the other hand there is a couple out of around 57 that are lovely to handle and have never learnt any bad habits.
We have horses at our yard during the holidays who live in at a College near York. When I went to collect one its headcollar was tied up with string. It had sores behind its knees and its outdoor rugs were falling apart.
We sent it back with a new headcollar and sorted its knees but the next time she came back they were the same again. The girl who loaned it during the hols said that the Yard managers weren't bothered and because the knees were sore the mare played up when the cream was put on so the students didn't bother.
One horse was apparantly tied up while they did something with it despite it pulling back a few times it was not untied and eventually reared, snapped the rope and fell over backwards. It had to be put down because of its injuries.
my experience has been 'never do it again'..I got my boy back after 6mths - my decision and glad that I did he was in a bad way, bad back, sores on withers where rugs hadn't been changed practically lived out all winter his stable rugs were minging as they were under t/o rug, mud fever quite bad, lame in a hind leg, skinny and the overall looking after of him was very poor...not what I wanted at all.
so me personally I would not rate it based on my bad experience.

Jacob is there why dont you give C a ring....she'll probably know more about what kind of horse they are looking for
i'd never do it again i loaned my boy to the college i went to and they didnt give a toss about them he's such a genuine horse and he spent 3 hours a day five days a week in the school when they said thay would only do one lesson and he got used in the racing acadamey which they signed a contract to say he wouldnt be used so in my opinion unless you can watch what they are doing with your horse

yeah i thought about that....but if i had to have him back in all of the holiays i wouln't be financially any better off?! plus i really would like him to go to a proper home i think with a nice new mummy
A local college to me usually has some pretty fantastic horses....BUT unfortunatley many of the people whom are allowed to compete these are absolute PIGS! they do not give a damn about the horse just getting the "outline" by what ever method is quickest - sawing the mouth, spurs and the last straw for me was seeing a horse go into a walk trot test after being warmed up for over an hour with whip weals on its rump ! Guess where the show was - yep at the college ! person did win though and the prelim and the novice......
My eldest daughter has just completed a two year couse at a popular college and got really fed up with the way some of the horses were treated. I have two out on loan but would never loan to a college.
