This evening I e-mailed the Shadow DEFRA Minister, Nick Herbert (who was an old mate from a former life
grin.gif
) and got a very prompt and positive response! This outbreak of EIA has fortunately happened at a time of year when risk of spread will be low - although the horses in question had apparently beein in the UK for a month - and horses from the premises will undoubtedly have moved to other parts of the country within that time!

This has been an accident waiting to happen - let's make sure it doesn't happen again. It only takes 50 MPs getting 5 e-mails each on a topic for it to become 'an issue' - Nick will do his bit to bring pressure on the Government - he'll need backing from MPs who have constituents jumping up and down on the subject!

I've copied a few bits from my e-mail below - and anyone who'd like to use them in an e-mail to their own MP, please do!

As you can imagine, the reported cases of EIA found in Wiltshire have
caused serious consternation amongst intelligent horse owners and breeders
throughout the country. And more than that, it has caused real anger
against the Government/DEFRA as this has been an accident waiting to
happen for years - and more particularly since the rise of the FRANCH
rescue scam.

The rescue situation may have escaped your notice. In France, a number of
farmers are in the business of fattening horses for slaughter - these
horses coming into France from other parts of the EU. A wily French
farmer cottoned onto the fact that sentimental English horse lovers could
be conned into 'saving' these horses - by buying them at several hundred
Euros above slaughter value. These horses are coming into the UK under
the tripartite agreement - with bugger all by way of health checks. The
best of them are also being bought out of the fattening farms by English
dealers, brought over here and sold at substantial profits - despite the
fact that there was a good reason they'd ended up slaughter bound!

A Defra spokesman claims: ""Imports of horses on any basis are only
permitted from countries where the risk of disease is perceived negligible
or equivalent to the UK," - so how are 9 horses from Romania - where EIA
is endemic - allowed in??

Horse passports contain a total of 6 pages for recording details of health
checks when horses are imported and exported. Unless it's a competition
horse, these pages are usually blank!

This is a serious and ongoing problem that DEFRA appears clueless about.
DEFRA actually believes horse passports are working! They're not! Horses
are regularly sold without them. MANY horses in the National Equine
Database (NED)have been sold half-a-dozen times since their records were
last updated - and some have two or three passports! While most Breed
Societies are religious about proper identification and recording, the
generic PIO's are not.

There are allegedly more than a million horse owners in the UK- and
contrary to Labour's views, not all of them are Tory foxhunters! Many are
ordinary working class people who sacrifice all their spare time and money
for the pleasure of owning an ordinary 'happy hacker' - kept on d.i.y.
livery. They see DEFRA's incompetence as putting THEIR horse at serious
risk! (And let's face it, if these two EIA infected horses had arrived
during the summer, the disease would have spread as quickly as F&M - and
we'd be seeing compulsory slaughter of thousands of previously healthy -
and much loved - horses and ponies.

Horse owners would like to see a strong response to this wake-up call.

1. Why have exports been stopped - but not imports?
2. The Tripartite agreement is seriously flawed - it should be
re-examined and safeguards be put in place to ensure it does NOT allow
horses from countries where EIA/other diseases are endemic to slip into
the country via France or Ireland.
3. PRE-import tests for EIA/CEM/etc should be required for ALL horses
coming into the country.

Add any pertinent information you have about horses being bought or sold without passports, or about dodgy imports, and ask him/her what he/she intends to do about it! If you're ina very horsey area, stress how many of his/her constituents are horse owners!!

Let's ensure DEFRA's kitchen gets very hot indeed!

Would love to email our mp's can do scunthorpe and grimsby
smile.gif
Do i just forward what you have put above??If not could you please let me know what i need to put in email for major impact
smile.gif

Thankyou

You could just use mine - but obviously top and tail it Dear Mr. MP - and yours sincerely - but for BEST effect add anything you can about yourself/your horses and how you voted for him/her at the last election (and MIGHT at the next, depending .....
grin.gif

If enough people use this example, MPs might twig it's a pro-forma - but it actually doesn't really matter if MPs see it as an 'organised' campaign in some ways it helps - as 'organised campaign' suggests a coherent group that might lobby AGAINST them!!

Hi Janet, Great post and I will be writing to my MP today and asking members of mr RC to do the same, using your excellent letter. I have however slightly changed the bit about French rescue horses to make it a bit less emmotive for my version! Hope that is OK:

As you can imagine, the reported cases of EIA found in Wiltshire have caused serious consternation amongst intelligent horse owners and breeders throughout the country. And more than that, it has caused real anger against the Government/DEFRA as this has been an accident waiting to happen for years due to major flaws in the Tripartite agreement with France and Ireland.
This flaw effects the movement of meat horses form EU countries where diseases like EIA are endemic to those countries where it is not and no health checks are carried out even if these horses are then removed from the meat trade by dealers and sold to countries like the UK as leisure/breeding/competition horses.

A Defra spokesman claims: ""Imports of horses on any basis are only
permitted from countries where the risk of disease is perceived negligible or equivalent to the UK," - so how are 9 horses from Romania - where EIA is endemic - allowed in??

Brilliant Janet - thank you.

DEFRA actually put an addendum in the import regs last year, making specific reference to the import of horses under the guise of rescue from France - which was a really great move forward.

But your email absolutely hits the nail on the head - and i'll be contacting my MP again today.

Well, I’ve had a reply back from one of my MEPs & I think he may have missed the point. To quote:

<font color="red"> “Paul Nuttall M.E.P. supports your campaign over the abuse of animal rights.

The EU is a distant and bureaucratic political body, which makes over 75% of the laws for our country.

These laws are made in secret by unelected EU civil servants and MEPs can only suggest amendments once these laws are revealed to the EU Parliament.

If elected, UKIP would withdraw from the EU and resume making laws and policies in our own democratically elected Parliament, to reflect the wishes of our citizens.

The EU does not have a good track record on animal welfare, due often to the lobbying of big businesses, who place profit before anything-including animal rights.

UKIP would redraft such laws and make sure the wishes of our citizens regarding animal welfare are reflected in our own legislation.”

Sometimes I do wonder about the people elected to speak for us....

Dear forum users

I've been waiting for confirmation from Defra all day on what the situation is with horse exports. I finally heard back 10 minutes ago and have posted a news story — horse exports from the UK are NOT banned.

http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/news/397/294099.html

There are 21 countries around the world — the most notable being the US — that will not accept horses from the UK at the moment because of the EIA case, but Defra assures us that this will be lifted within the next 24 hours.

I am in contact with Defra on almost an hourly basis, and will update the news pages as soon as I have more information.

With regards to the Tripartite agreement and what exactly happened — I am working day and night to get some answers. There is very little information coming through at present but rest assured what we do know — via vets, horse industry officials, the grapevine, locals in Wiltshire etc — will come out. I'm looking to answer all of your questions in next week's magazine but aim to provide instant updates on the current situation on the website.

If anyone would like to contact me directly with questions or concerns, please email abigail_butcher@ipcmedia.com

Thanks

I emailed my MP, David Wright, this morning and have had no response....

Give him a chance!

Thursday is quite a busy day in Parliament - and if he had meetings during the day he might not have had a chance to read his e-mail yet - let alone reply. Mind you, he probably hasn't realised that there ARE horses in Telford!

Thanks Abigail.

We really want DEFRA to start thining very seriously about the TPA - and most immediately tell us what they are putting in place now to ensure that anything comming in to this country is vet checked (regardless of the TPA).

I have just received a letter back from my MP which is a very quick response as I only contacted them yesterday! He has written to the DEFRA minister Jim Fitzpatrick about this and will let me know his response.

So that's a really good start. I have to say I am very impressed with how quickly he got back on this one!

Tankey &amp; Everyone
When you write to your MP you should include your address--so they know you are a constituent
It causes chaos if non-constituents write to MPs

They often do not answer emails but will put your question to the Minister involved and you will get a hard copy from Westminster (posh envelopes!!)--it may take time!!
