OK so I still need some help with regard to the correct dress for me (and horse) for in hand showing classes.

I was planning to wear:

Navy jacket - or does it have to be tweed?
Cream jods - or should I wear trousers?
brown jod boots or long black boots - which?
White shirt & spotty tie
Black riding hat (I have a grey and black one also?)
Do I need gloves? What colour
Do I need a show cane? I have a brown one is this ok?

Horse, plaited with brown in hand bridle with velvet browband.

We are doing condition & turnout and Riding horse type
??????

Personally I wouldnt wear johds, Some sensible shoes and cream trousers are best, but if you've only got johds were johd boots as they will be much more comfortable to run in. Rest of it sounds fine if its only a fun show. Good Luck!!

Oh and yes wear gloves and take a cane or schooling whip.

OK, If I were you I would try and replace Jods with Trousers.
However, if you only have limited kit and it is only a local show I would be inclined to dress up in what I had and see which you think looks the smartest.

You may be able to beg, borrow or steal from someone else?

Are there any photo's online you could check out? I am off to have a look now.

The only thing I have found said don't wear trousers the same colour as your horse's legs. As he is a dark bay I guess beige is best. The only reason I was thinking jods is because I am also hoping to do a couple of jumping classes with him too and don't want to change.

Trousers definately look a lot smarter and are more correct. Do you have any you could wear over your jods? Then slip them off for the jumping.

A tweed jacket is more correct for inhand, but if you don't have one, don't worry. Gloves are a must, preferably brown, but any discrete colour is fine.

It sounds like your horse is over 3 years old, so a ridden bridle is correct (with normal bit and reins), rather than an inhand bridle.

Good luck at the show.

dammit.........I've just bought an in hand bridle too.

Do I have to have leather reins or will my usual rubber ones do?

I'm afraid inhand bridles are only meant for babies (although some people at local level don't realise this). Leather (plain, plaited or laced) are better, but I wouldn't buy new ones especially if you only have rubber - as long as they're not purple/green/yellow rubber!
