I took my new Gypsy Cob to a couple of local shows and he did really well. He had a really bad problem with mites when he came and on vets advice I've had to clip off his feathers so I could treat his skin. Now we have a local show coming up in August and I really want to take him in either a coloured class or cob class. My problem is he has a very long mane and there is no way I want to hog or pull it. So the question I'm asking is will we look really stupid if I enter him like this? I know it's only local and not that strict but I'd rather not go if it's going to be a real no no. Thanks.

Just go for it- it should also be baed on confo too. You say he did really well showing before so have another go-you can always explain to the judge if he/she asks. :)

go for it!! a freind of mine has a cob with one feather missing due to needing injection into pastern joint for an injury, he still gets well placed! It's aqquired, not a conformation blemish.

I had exactly the same problem with my gypsy vanner only as well as mites he had awful mud fever (6 months on he still has healed). I have clipped his legs a few times and after far to many vet visits, various injections/powders/sprays/creamsthe mites are gone! I still put some d-itch in his feed and apply a powder that kills the mites to his legs every few weeks to make sure they stay gone. The showing classes I'm entering him in are open cob- clipped or hairy, which is great for him as he's in-between the 2 + the vet has said I can now start regrowing his feathers :)

My friend's coloured cob has a problem with mites too and her feathers had to be clipped off.her mane is about 2 foot long and my friend did not want to lose that too.
She showed her mare just for the experience really, not expecting to get a placing due to being 'mismatched' :)

She won all her classes to date this season so not doing badly at all ;)

So as someone else said 'Go for it!!'
