Local yard has strangles - what can I do?

How irresponsible of the yard not to shut down . If they had a scrap of decency and thought for other owners in the surrounding area they close their doors until given the all clear. How selfish can some people be ?!

Ok guys, be nice - I have to say I'm shocked they're not just totally shutting down to ride it out - but at the same time, it is their business and their livelihood - not so easy to just give up on for 4 months, when you've got young kids to look after etc. Obviously I'm not thrilled, being so close, but its not my choice so all we can do is look after our guys as best as possible!

Spoken to the vet this morning, there are 'more than a few, but less than a lot' of horses showing symptoms, but all horses are being monitored. Vet given me loads of useful advice on how to keep our guys safe, but mostly we're just going to have to ride it out and hope for the best.

ETA: Vets are Bushy and Willesley, been more than happy to talk to me about it this morning x

To be honest if it was a smaller yard and didn't shut there would be uproar, because it's so well known in the area people are skirting around the issue. I understand the issue of livelihood but there should at least be a stop on hacking out

Really bad if they don't close at least there should be no hacking out. Irresponsible.

I used to work weekends at a riding school which got a single case of strangles (no idea how but it was assumed a customer carried it from another yard to ours as the horse never left the premises). We carried on teaching in the indoor and outdoor arenas, but hacking was stopped for both school horses and liveries. Disinfectant baths were set up and anyone entering or leaving had to dip their boots. I nursed the horse at weekends and changed into different clothes to do so. Lots of handwashing of course. I don't think there is any need to close the yard down totally as long as everyone is careful.
