Just another consumer society must-have to be relegated to the back of the closet/drawer/rescue centre when it gets boring/inconvenient/not so cute on your Instagram.
I've posted before about an acquaintance who bought a wholly unsuitable dog from a dodgy horse person (would therefore assume them to also be a dodgy dog person) and now the dog is dead. He was pts not long after his 1st birthday.
Bad and irresponsible breeding meant he had awful hip dysplasia so would have needed pts at a young age regardless. However the whole "you shouldn't get a dog during lockdown" resulted in an accident when dog was left alone thrn requiring surgery. Then not acting quickly enough when dog was ill when she went home, because they didn't know any better, resulted in the vets having no option but to pts ?
What I'm seeing is that dodgy breeders made a quick buck out of lockdown and now people who did the right thing and waited, are unable to home their well bred puppies from health tested/working or show graded parents, because everyone already has the cheaper, more readily available version.
At least these people are admitting their problem. My son dog sat for some neighbours last week. They had an elderly KCCS for years and he died during lockdown. Within 3 weeks to my amazement they had found another KCCS from a breeder. I never saw him but son showed me a picture and I thought it didn't really look typical of the breed but thought nothing more except puppy farm breeder probably.
A year later the dog visited us with son and granddaughter while they were sitting him.
He is a lovely gentle boy but very obviously a springer x . He has a shortened face and bug eyes but a springer body in size, hair distribution and shape with a springer temprement (flighty and a bit scatty). He has terrible conformation and walks on his "fetlocks" in front if that makes sense. His back legs are completely bent and his front legs go in opposite directions. He is sound but hunches his back as if he is in discomfort. He is scared of everything new but once he settled and started doing dog play with my two he was fabulous.
My son offered to take the dog as the owners leave him a lot and are disappointed he is not like their old dog. Turns out he is "worth" 4K - so if son will pay the money they paid for him he can have an unneutered walking vet bill. Luckily son cannot afford it or I think he might.
Poor animal is very obviously a puppy farm/byb reject that these idiots bought in a hurry but don't have the courage to admit their mistake. I am hoping that they continue to ask son and his partner to have the dog regularly so he gets some life. Last time they left him with my son it was so they could go for a walk in the country in peace.... I have no words.
Regarding the poor mite I posted about the owners have asked son and partner to dog sit again this weekend as they want to go out. Son is keen to buy him - not for 4K obviously, but they are holding out for the money. I also think they are finding it difficult to admit they have made a terrible mistake. I found out today he is not insured so god help him when he has to go to the vet as the bills will be more than 4K I am sure.
So far son and partner have said no to dog sitting againas they feel they are getting too attached and are just allowing the whole situation to continue. Also feeling a bit used as they do it free of charge. Son is going to make them a cash offer of £500 on Friday as that is all he can afford and the dog is worth nothing in financial terms. Please keep your fingers crossed for Sammy xx
