Hoping someone may have some experience of this, basically we are looking to purchase a 2 year old that should make approx 14.2, she has a small history of a locking patella ( excuse the spelling if it is incorrect), the vet has said it is not a surgical case and the youngster should grow out of it, so
a: would this go through a normal vetting ?
b: would any of you purchase a horse withthis condition ?
c: anyone had any experience of it.
d: is it anything to do with incorrect breeding ?

Looked at her today free schooling and she looks superb, and is a stunning litle filly, she is going for really silly money as well.

We have a pony who had a locking patella - he is a bit upright behind. We have had him since he was 6. He first went down with an upwardly fixating patella when he was about 11 or 12, after he had been broken to harness (he was my brother's pony and had done normal Pony Club type activities up until this point).

We decided, along with the vet, not to operate, and exercised him to strengthen his muscles in his hindlegs/quarters and he is fine. He is 24 now, and since the problem originally started he has done all the normal Pony Club stuff and hunted. He has not had a reoccurence of it since then.

I am not sure whether the horse would go through a vetting, but from my experience, if the vet says she will grow out of it I would go for it and make sure that you do plenty of work with her (when she is old enough) to build up her muscle.

Good luck

kim12 a locking patella can be quite common in youngsters especially geldings because of lack of muscle and condition.I have had several over the years and they had rited themselves as they have matured and been ridden.
