Locking Patella's

Thanks for completing, very useful, if anyone else can spare their time it will be very much appreciated.

Madhoss - My college project is to look into if there is a connection between age, breed and work load and the condition. Also how successful different treatments are. My friend unfortunately had to have her horse PTS as he had locking patella's which progressed on to displaced patella and then fractured patella. He had ligaments stripped in both legs which didn't work and then had ligaments cut in right leg but didn't work either which is why patella displaced as had no ligaments to support it. Shall pm you when I've looked further into the condition and treatments. Should be around March.

Done. If at all possible, I would be really interested in any findings as my youngster's patella has started locking.

Best advice is keep your horse in work - hacking/straight lines with moderate hill work is excellent to build up the muscles in the legs and this helps with the locking. Keep him/her turned out as much as possible as well.
I also recommend a joint supplement be started to prevent any possible damage caused by the locking.

Please can you pm me the findings too as very interested in this as my horse has just finished total box rest and now is working for 20-30 mins a day and is 6 yrs old. Fingers crossed it will stop with work again

Done - ditto results. Mine was a young pony many years ago, and he did it only momentarily when pulled out of his stable. I sold him on, and had no come back, so assume that he grew out of it........
