Locking Stifle Joint

What are everyone's views on having the operation for this sort of problem done..?

Is it known to work - or does it cause more problems for the horse afterwards..?

I am possibly having to face having this op done but have heard nothing but bad things about it by other people so am not sure of having it done! Wanted to see if anyone has any good stories/views on it.

I dont know anything about op but had pony with locking stifles lots of work and joint supplement stopped it.

I was going to ask the same thing as I have a miniature shetland with upward fixation of the patella and wondered on op sucess?

Heard lots of horror stories about the op, but we had a pony done several years ok and completely sorted out her problem. Wouldn't hesitate to have it done again. Incidently it is something that some horses seem to grow out of as they become older/fitter/stronger!

I think I am going to go with the work route at the moment as have looked into this more this afternoon and most things I read say theres a 50/50 chance of it fixing the problem or it becoming 10xs worse and I don't want that. My pony's only 8yrs

I have a very well bred Shagya Arab brood mare. She had juvenille arthiritis in her near fetlock and locks the stifle on this leg from time to time.

My vet has just manipulated it. She was 4 years when I bought her and seems to have improved. I am told that Arabs are prone to this and that hill work - walking helps.

Our mare has not had a problem for over 6 months.

We had a welsh sec.D operated on 10years ago, both stifles done on the same day at home by the local vet. Very successful outcome he is still going strong ponyclubbing, jumping and he is a fantastic driving pony too, looks totally sound. The box rest is a pest I think it was either 4 or 6 weeks, can't remember, then slowly back into work.

I would'nt recommend breeding off your horse as I understand it's a hereditory problem.
