Anyone have any experience or information on this? How much does it affect the horse and their ridden work? Is it treatable or manageable?

My daughter broke in a pony this summer that was supposed to have showed signs of a locking stifle. We had no trouble for the 6 months that she was with us - this included a two week holiday whilst we were away.

The pony was sold when it left us and within a week showed signs of a locking stifle, so bad that it needs a year off and a possible operation.

If the pony had been bigger we would have kept her, as the owner offered for her to stay, but it just shows how different management can affect horses. The home she went to was knowledgeable so it wasn't as though they were doing anything wrong.

Wanted to add that while the pony was with us she was in regular work with mini competitions, hunting etc every other week by the end of the summer.

I have known a couple with this and TBH I would not buy one with it.

My little Shetland had it, he would lock up and it was nasty to see but did not seem to cause him any pain. On vets advice he came into some work even though he was only 2yo, just some long reining, including round the village but it did make a difference. Once he grew up and did a bit more it rarely happened.

Another one was a lovely hunter horse, it did not lock up often, but it was not something I wanted to buy into. They tend to be better with work, and the vet did say there was some type of operation that would help in the short to medium term, but may cause problems in later life. It was a good few years ago though, and I seem to think there may have been developments in treatment.

We have had two young ponies with locking stifles. Being in a stable overnight caused then to lock up, when they lived out or had access to a yard they were fine. They both grew out of it.

Hi, I have a pony who suffers badly with locking stifle, We are considering having the operation done on him. He regularly bucks you off if he is in pain whilst riding, He was originally bought for my 8 year old cousin but as he bucks he is not suitable (This is not every ride)
Any people that have had the op done and have had a bucking horse - has this improved since the op?

Also Approx how much does it cost?

Thanks

Hey all,

Well my horse had the opp last week! She only came into work last year and I have always struggled with left canter. I have evented her twice this year but two weeks ago she was VERY lame. Vet came said 'yep locking stifle you need surgery', referred us to Hird and Partners who discovered the lameness had been caused by a ligament moving the meniscus which could have been caused by the stifle locking. So my advice would be do it sooner rather than later! She had both stifles done on Thursday and also they have hopefully fixed the meniscus problem too. She is now home and on 6 weeks box rest before going for a check up. I think we'll be in the region of 4k by the time we've finished but obviously ours is worse because of the meniscus problem. :) If you want any more details feel free to pm me :)
