Hi All,

It's been ages since I have posted in here but everyone has always been so helpful so I have returned for much needed advise.

Frank is 20 month old lab. My problems are: his obsession with large logs and his lack of recall at times (normally these issues are together!)

He is not interested in food, so won't come back for treats.
Walking away will catch his interest but not enough to come back.
If I get down, open my arms and call he will sometimes come.

I need him to stop carrying such large logs, sometimes they are so big he can't lift them, he just drags them. But its getting dangerous for other dogs and people! If I get him to leave it, he will just run back, even after walking for quite a distance.

People have suggested vibrating collar? Anyone used these?

Otherwise its going to be lead walks or a lunge line...

Any replies would be lovely, thank you.
 
Does he have toys at home?

Perhaps try getting his drive up for a particular toy (tuggy) you keep he doesnt have free access to it and he only gets to play with you with it (naturally he gets to 'win' now and then to keep him interested)

You are currently dull and logs put up more of a fight :)

Alternatively i have found in the past throwing myself on the floor and thrashing around works quite effectively ;)

He tends to destroy all toys so perhaps will invest in a new exciting one...
The thrashing around on the floor happens frequently at the moment!!
 
someone once made a very interesting comment that with labradors, if the nose is working, the ears aren't - so true! I will see your log and raise you eating other dogs poo, which my labrador bitch does - we have had and tried loads of things but its just something she does - labs are great dogs but can be rather strange at times!!
 
One of our labs does this too. Whistles seem to have more effect on him when he is "in the zone". You also have to be v strict with him - he is NOT allowed to go back for it, once he has walked with you for a bit (on lead if need be) he is allowed a smaller stick to fetch...

ps, rubber toys or thick rope last well with our two that like to destroy toys!
 
Any ideas on the recall thing? It's really starting to get me down and I rely heavily on my dog walker which he is becoming a pain for...

Love the ears/nose comment that is so true with frank...! Thank you for replies so far.
