She ate a bar of chocolate in the car on the way to a training class today, quite a big bar. It was cheap IKEA chocolate, with some sort of nuts in it. She ate about 80g of it (it was a 100g bar) before I got it off her. Should I be worried? What should I look out for? She was fine to get up and do an hour and a half 1-1 class though, so I'm not too panicky.

Perhaps give your vet a ring and they will beable to advise you whether to take her there and what to look out for.
Chocolate is very poisonous to dogs and the higher the coco contents the more potent it is.

Did you ask the trainers at the dog class, they would have been able to give you some advise as well

Well, you probably know that chocolate is not good for dogs, hence the question?

Did you mention it to your trainer? What did they say? Also, an hour and a half of one to one is pretty intense and i'm surprised your sessions are this long - group work maybe.

Anyhoo - look for any obvious changes to her behaviour and toilet habits as well as vomiting and take a trip to the vets if concerned.

From you recent posts can I ask - do your parents take you to dog training? And is it only Lola that does this?

Yea, my trainer didn't seem concerned. I'm guessing the fact that it was cheap chocolate would mean it was of a lower coco content? Yes, my mum takes me to training. The classes are normally one hour, with me handling three dogs, and one other lady handling two dogs. But we have a show on the 25th April and time is very limited with me attempting to study, plus training is 45 minutes down the road, so we went for a really intense class (We didn't push the dog too far or anything ;) ). I'll keep an eye on her, thanks :)

Okay, after a little bit of research I don't think she has eaten a toxic amount. Please correct me if I'm wrong though.

She ate 80g at most, 2.82 ounces.
She is at least 15kg, 33 pounds.

This site says that the strongest chocolate is baking chocolate. Since I don't know how strong this chocolate is, I'll go by that.
It says that 0.1 ounces per pound of body weight is okay.
Are my sums right, meaning she will be fine? Of course I'll still watch her.

I read over the weekend that the higher the concentrated cocoa amount the more toxic the chocolate ie dark chocolate is worse than milk.

All I can say is that all my dogs have had chocolate in the past and never fallen ill, we even had a lab as a kid that stole and ate a whole box of milk tray without problems. This isn't to say they eat huge quantities though.

Personally I don't think you'll have a problem.

If I came on here saying I had been stung by a Bee and was I going to be ok, some people would say how they had been stung by Bees lots of times with no ill effects, whilst others would say that they were desperately allergic to Bee Stings and would have to go straight to hospital if they were stung.
Same with your dog, whilst she may not have eaten a toxic amount according to the internet, and other people's dogs have gorged at the Cadbury's Factory and lived to be 153, neither you nor anyone on here can be sure how she will react.

Therefore ring the Vet.

Phone the vet for advice on signs to look out for - too late for apomorphine to stop it being observed. The poisons people generally quote the LD50, which translates as Lethal Dose in 50% of dogs. Some dogs are more sensitive than others, some breeds are more sensitive than others.

Milk tray is better than expensive dark chocolate, the LD50 of green and blacks 80% dark is about 25 grammes - the wrapper should say the amount of cocoa solids, which will give an idea of how strong the chocolate is. White chocolate wouldn't be an issue though...

In our house, chocolate is either upstairs (and dog not permitted upstairs) or on top of the cupboards where I can just about reach, or in the fridge. If the dog got in the fridge, he'd have the cheese first anyway - and he's never shown any interest in chocolate. In the car if there is chocolate it is either in the boot (inaccessible to dogs in my car due to engine in the way or large dog guard with no space for wriggly labradors) or locked in the glove box (locked because brat helped himself to OH's sandwiches from the shut but not locked glove box). No incidents from chocolate, just from dog learning to open doors with little round knobs and helping himself to his bag of food. If he gets in to the food again and doesn't die of a GDV, he will be marketed as the next houdini as he would have to get through a door with a bolt at the top of my reach (i.e. 5'6 plus my arm), remove the recycling box from on top of the food box and remove the lid of the food box! Oh, and the kitchen door has a boot lace if the bin has anything dangerous like bones in it. The lengths you have to go to with a greedy lab where the owner is a vet. Better than a friend though - the fridge has a padlock and chain after their dog broke in and stole stuff (when he had been shut in an entirely different room!)

Am I right in thinking lola is a border collie? Border collies have a lower tolerance to alot of things than most other breeds, one of these things is chocolate. I would ring your vet.

She's a BC cross. I was just on the phone to the pet shop (the one where I work) and they told me to keep an eye on her, but most likely any symptoms would have showed up by now, as she ate it at about half 10 this morning.

I would phone the vets if I was any more worried, but tbh I would prefer not to, as the nurses who answer the phone aren't the nicest and are reluctant to give advice over the phone, and I really don't think she needs a trip to the vets.

I looked up symptoms on the internet, and hyperactivity was the only one she had, but only one burst of energy this morning at training, nothing constant.

This was the first chocolate incident we have had, I just looked down on the floor and she had this bar. Apparently she has now developed a taste for foods she's not allowed though, when I had her in my room 'keeping an eye on her', I fell asleep for half an hour, and she managed to eat a tub of high protein fish food...

I think me + my dogs = a head desk case :p.

You are not a headdesk case! You are young and learning and accidents happen. At least you have the tenacity to ask advice on the forum. A lot of members have had years of experience with dogs and I'm sure the majority have had some sort of mishap involving their dogs at some point.:D

Just a little update, Lola is fine :).

The fish food yesterday went to her head though :p, I had plenty of leaping around me in circles, etc. today lol.

A friend's terrier stole and ate a large bar of chocolate. They didn't find out until they came downstairs in the morning and found it dead with the chocolate wrapper on the floor.

I once had my dog steal and eat several bars of Green and Black's chocolate (high coca content). I got her to throw it up using soda crystals and water, and no ill effects.
