What do you like to ride and compete in Long boots or nice leather chaps. I really like top quality chaps and am about to buy some new Ariat's as I find them so comfortable to ride in. I might be doing some ridden classes do you think I might get marked down for wearing them? Anyone know where I can get a good deal on the new chaps?

I have short boots and ariat gaiters. See the 14.2 competition ponies thread in pg for what they look like. If you mean a true chap rather that gaiters then if you go to any of the higher level local shows then you may be penalised for them. But gaiters with a zip up the back that are the same colour as your boots will be fine.

I love my long boots to ride in but am forced to resort to my short boots and chaps in the warm weather as my legs and feet roast in the long boots! :)

Wow thanks for the heads up on the unicornleather site for chaps just bought a pair what a bargain!! Loved their own style of cotton girths so ordered two of them as well. I can't stand the elasticated girths to much movement in the saddle it must rub!! I go for cotton every time.

Thanks for the replies folks you saved me a good bit of money.:D

Did my first ridden class and came second so I think my chaps must be fine or could it be down to the judge on the day? Any way I am going to keep at it as I definitely ride better in chaps than long boots.;)

I wear Ariat boots & chaps for everyday and IMO they are no where near smart enough to wear for competitions.

Black long leather boots for competitions - there are LOTS of sizes out there, and many companies do M2M or semi M2M options.

Horses for courses as they say! I think my brand new leather Ariat chaps and boots all nice clean and shiny looked very smart. They certainly did not get commented on by the judge and with 8 riders in the class there were plenty wearing boots that could have been placed ahead of us.:p

I love gaitors and the range they sell nowadays mean I never buy long boots for the purpose of showing! Gaitors afford a great deal more flexibility in the leg, which I really like.
:)

I'm currently saving up for the budget Brogini boots, but in the past I have always found short boots and leather chaps to be great. I school in short boots and regular chaps, so swapping them for leather chaps are then swapped in for shows. I tend to prefer the effect of short boots and chaps, I feel like I have support but still have plenty of flexibility which is very hard to come by in long boots! xx

i ride every day in my ariat boots, and chaps/gaitors. i cub in my brown ariat combination, i show in long boots (black) which are tight (yes i need to slim) and hunt in long black boots (the comfey ones!!) event in long black tight for dressage/comfey ones for sj/xc. brown ones for pre novice. you have to do what suits you and is comfey. as long as clean and shiny, and suitable to event required.

I can't get away with boots so I wear Ariat boots and chaps for every day riding and for competitions I use Ariat boots and gaitors.

Glad I am not the only convert from stuffy stiff long boots (sorry unicornleather I know you sell both but chaps are better for me). I think if you are riding better in chaps then comfort for both me and the horse come before what is deemed to be etiquette.
