I have a long dog, (greyhound x whippet) which I rehomed from a rather neglectful owner in May this year. She is about 8, the vet thinks. She is on Burns Chicken and Rice dry food and is fed morning and evening.
A couple of days ago, she started having very runny stools. She is out and about with me most of the time. Since I have had her she has been wholly clean in the house. She has now done several very runny poos on the living room carpet, with no request to go out prior to doing them, yesterday and today. Obviously, I haven't said anything to her, just cleaned up the poo and disinfected/scrubbed the carpet. Poor dog!
The only two things I can think of that may have triggered this are being started on Rimadyl by vet 12 days ago - one tablet with food, re stiff left hip, and stealing a bowl of the cat's dry food, which is James Wellbeloved Turkey and Rice. Cat was not pleased!
Could you give me the benefit of your knowledge and experience? Are either of the above likely to be responsible? What to do?
I'm back to the vet on Friday for him to review her stiff hip and adjust meds as necessary.
I've owned dogs all my life, but almost all Gsd's. My beloved last one was pts in March this year, aged 13, with sudden onset kidney failure. I was not going to have another dog for a while, being very sad about the loss of my Gsd. However, this one (the whippety person) was going to be pts, because she was "getting in the way of (the previous owner's) my life , and all the rescues are full and she's got to go - now!". So here she is and is a lovely trainable dog who gets on v well with horses, dog, cats and rabbits and people! Perfect - except for the squitty bum!

My first though could well be the cat food, cat food comes through them like water, esp a descent amount:D
I would starve her for 12 to 24 hours and then bind her with some boiled chicken and rice then reintroduce her own food once she produces a firm faeces, if she does not dry up or goes down hill and not her usual self have her a vet check.

Great advice above :)

I have two whippets and believe me... it doesn't take much to turn their number twos into something special! They're not called whippies for nothing!

Thanks very much, both helpful replies: I shall follow your advice, Cayla and report back! Will also mention this episode of the suits to vet when I see him on Friday.

Quick update! Long dog much better today, stools much firmer and no 'extra presents' indoors. More lively and playfull. I think it may have been a response to the Stolen Cat Food. I had a look at Rimadyl side effects on the internet: horrors! It seems that lot of dog owners and their dogs have suffered greatly and, in some cases, the dogs have a traumatic death. This has been as linked to the use of Rimadyl
My old GSD was on Rimadyl for years as she had dodgy pelvis, having been kicked by a horse visiting the yard. She appeared to have no bad responses to it, and was comfortable up to her death earlier this year. Have any of you experienced bad side effects? Are gaze hounds particularly vulnerable to canine pain killers and anti inflamatories?
Thank you for your opinions and advice. Much appreciated.
