Long Girth Straps V Normal Girth Straps ..

Do they affect the saddle?

Obviously the majority of dressage saddle have long girth straps, but some jumping / XC style saddle too have long straps.

Why is this - style, balance, fit?

Anyone care to enlighten me?

makes for less bulk under the saddle flap, I think that's why!

Personally I hate them. They always seem to pinch the horses's sides.

Less between you and the horse. However, if you ride by yourself they can be a pain to tighten.

Would they not be like tightening a dressage girth?

And could you just get your straps extended on a normal saddle? I have a Barnsby event and am thinking abiut getting he straps extended over the winter (when horses have time off) for next season

The reason i bought a single flap saddle (with long girth straps) was because I found riding winston in a traditional saddle very hard.
Hes very broad as you can imagine, and i found it hard to get my legs round him.
Removing the bulk of the 2nd flap and the usual girth system works because i can get closer to my horse.

I like them for this reason, but i must admit riding a horse like snoopy i really dont need it as hes quite narrow (compaired to winston) and find it easy to get my leg on.

Im having the saddler out on tuesday to look at my saddle on winston and snoopy, im not sure what to go for on snoop (jumping wise) something cheap lol but i dont care if its back to traditional tbh! although im quite used to having to really bend down and do my girth up now lol

Means I can touch my boys sides! No bulk under my leg, I hate riding in my standard strap saddles now.

Well madam is quite wide, so I might go for having the long straps ... I could always have them cut short I guess if I dont like them.

This saddle will mainly be for flatwork, I will be keeping my jumping saddle [being positive here] when I start jumping.

Usually there is always someone around to get me started if I struggle to reach. My mare is good and stands very still when I do her girth normally so I should be alright if not a little unsuple at first with long straps.

I find tightening a short girth easier than tightning a long one as you only have to bend down rather than moving a leg, holding the flap and then doing up the girth!

There is also less bulk between you and the horse

Yep, which can be quite difficult when you are by yourself, I used to have to get complete strangers to help me at shows as I couldn't do it by myself.

I hate having to use a dressage girth with my treeless, its like his sides are too short for the girth to comfortable do up anywhere
