Long girth straps

On dressage saddles and a lot of treeless saddles, are they just for less bulk between you and your horse or is there another reason for them?

On a dressage saddle it's so that you have less bulk under your legs - I have all my saddles changed to long straps as I hate the bulk under the flap.

I think with the treeless saddles they only have the one flap so can only have a long strap.
