long hair riders

Eek I hadn't thought of getting scalped! I normally side pony doubled up or plait.

Those full cheek shanks are a menace! I am often getting stabbed when horse tries to rub me the big oaf!

See if your hair is long and thick a hairnet and ponytail just won't do it. Mine is too bulky and too heavy to stay in a net. I've not found a strong enough one for years, the last good one I had was made from a fishnet stocking!

I used to have thick curly hair down to my bum.... Then I had it shaved lol, so from arse length to about 5 inches on top with a fringe and shaved back/sides.
sooo much cooler and less sweaty!

Yep! Im going blue in a week or so... My friend said 'if we get to any dressage or showing competitions make sure its all tucked up!'
the dressage world has progressed and encompassed bling but bright blue shaved heads may be a bit 'out there' lol ;-)

Those who say their hair is too long and thick to go in a net. Go to Boots or Superdrug and buy a slumber net. They are bigger and thicker than normal hairnets (they are usually the ones which are also available in pink).

I used to have hair long enough to sit on, pretty thick too. I managed it!

Kat, have you tried putting hair I'm a pony tail, then haired, then banded again?

Yes, there isn't normally enough net to do that with a pony tail. For shows I plait, fold the plait and put the net on so that the weight of the hair isn't stretching the net.

I'll try one of those then, although I looked at hairnets in boots the other day and spotted the slumber nets and thought they looked better but didn't buy them as they only had them in blue or pink...... not sure how that would go down for dressage or showing....

I Hate the line I get round my hair from a ponytail so hairnet all the way. Even under baseball cap to muck out. Keeps it out the way but straight

My daughter did tack and turn out for the first time the other day. Having been out of horsey circles for yonks now I clean forgot she would need a hairnet. Yesterday I ordered some from ebay to solve next time, however, I am unsure of how to use them under a riding hat, for riding I thought that the long hair was just tucked up inside the net - not necessarily plaited or made into a bun (as suggested in this thread which I would have thought could be awkward with a low backed hat), but then how do you hold the net up. Do you add an elasticated band over the net and the hair?

I must admit I read the comment about injuries due to clips on the head with interest as I would have thought a useful ruse was those nets that have a built in clip

well mines not nearly that long but probably mid back length and past boobs on the front but i either tie it in a low pny tail to ride in which just keeps it out the way or twist it into a low 'ballet bun' like i would to compete - if I'm on the yard and hatless its usually twisted and shoved onto the top of my head in a very messy floppy bun type mess :D

This is me- I like to think i ROCK the floppy bun look though :D

I usually put a pony in then net over whole head (like a swim cap) this will fold the pony in half (depending on length) then i usually fold again and add a scrunchie to match the turnout over to hold tight. Hope that helps! My girls have long hair and if showing i plait either side and fold plait in half and pretty ribbons.

aerborn make heavyweight hair nets which are bigger and sturdier than there otherse..

I do think the chances of scalping must be small.. after all you have a hat holding your scalp on ;)

To be honest I never give a second thought about my hair.

I just ride in whatever hairstyle I have that day. Usually at the weekends though I just bung it up and clip it. My hair is long, it goes past my bra strap.

Mine is waist length and SUPER thick, I plait it almost 24/7 otherwise it is always in my face! :o I ride with it plaited usually - no way I could stick it under my hat as I'd need one about 2 sizes larger, if I take my pony tail over my head it comes past my chin
For shows, I french plait it from about level with my ears which doesn't cause too much bulk, but helps tame the crazy bits at the base, then plait down the length, fold 3-4 times and secure, currently with bands, but I can see me learning how to sew it in soon as I think it might work better, but it's a pain to try and do on your own! I then put a normal hairnet on over everything with a band looseish just at the top of the 'bun' formed by the plait, then one of those hairnet/bow/clip things over all of that & a band on the underside of the net which I loop discreetly over/behind the bow so it's hidden but supports some of the weight of my hair. :p

In bun for competing:

Worst thing that has ever happened with it, is I was stood fastening my mares rug whilst she was eating from a hay net... and as I was stood with my back to the net, she managed to grab a mouthful of hair instead of hay! Thankfully it didn't rip out, it just hurt! Other than that, I've never really had an issue. If I'm doing something like clipping etc though, I plait my hair and then put it down the back of my top (I've competed like that too when I couldn't be bothered doing the bun without help! used my stock to keep it in place!) to stop the plait from thwacking me in the face constantly!

Sometimes I think it would be easier to just cut it short :p

Sol - respect for coping with your 'mane' ;-) I've had long hair all my life and I've never sussed how to even do a straight forward plait with mine, let alone everything that you describe.

Ah you are similar to me then sol, I do the folded plait to make a bun, a normal bun is so big I can't get my hat on. I tend to just use normal nets (the aerborn ones) not the bun nets as they are never big enough and I am paranoid about falling with a metal hair clip.

As you say I'd need a bigger hat if I tried to put my hair in my hat, I need a big enough one anyway, thick hair adds a lot of bulk. I've also done the down the jacket trick!

I died mine blue for bluechip! I can be spotted in the back ground of the main pic in H&H mag quite easily with it ;) haha!

I never even notice the clip, doubt it could do much damage if I fell, my hair acts as too much padding :p For some reason, I never used to manage with the bun net ones either (yet my hair was shorter!) but this one must have an oddly large net! It's still not huge, and wouldn't really work without the addition of another band underneath I don't think as the net doesn't really go around the full bun! Definitely couldn't be doing with all that faffing on a daily basis though, it gives me a headache too. Makes me glad I don't compete often!
