i want to start long lining my youngster to improve his balance, self carriage and build up some muscle. have never done this before and was wondering if anybody had any tips, also what tack/gear you use. don't worry will be having help from someone with experience just wanted to get a bit more info.

I long rein bailey quite a lot, I use his saddle- purely because I find the height of his stirrups (and the fact they have a little movement laterally) easier than using the holes on a roller. Then his normal bridle, and two very long lunge lines. Using padded Aeroborn ones is a nightmare- cotton ones are much easier! I vary work between straight lines in the school amd out hacking and working him in two lines in the school.

Practice makes perfect as they say...

I long line in full tack or a dually and roller, bridle and roller or dually on its own, depends what you want really, if you're using full tack then secure your stirrups with an old stirrup leather or similar under the horse's belly. I was using 20m lunge lines but found them really cumbersome so instead i got some 10m dog recall long lines and find them much better and easier to handle.

I have long lined a few of my horses and have taught my self, its pretty easy, i just use a roller and a lunge line or a set of lunge reins, from then on after you have established the basics and the horse is going well you can add side reins etc..
