Long lining

I need to build up my horse by long lining in straight lines and feel I don't have a good enough technique. Would it be acceptable to use side reins or the equi ami to encourage seeking for the contact/use of the back and rear end and then atatch the lines to a caverson ?
 
Best to get someone to help you, it's not great to used gadgets when long lining or long reining. Just treat it like riding, but from the floor, just make sure you really work on getting horse active off the voice, and be worth buying an exercise driving whip as much better than a dressage or lunge whip for using long lining or long reining!
 
I prefer to long line with just reins rather than gadgets, as other has said just think of it as riding but you need to use the lines to create "leg" action too. It's a bit of dying art I've found which is a shame as I doing doing lots on long reins before I teach it on board. Find someone that can teach you is my recommendation.
 
Get a friend to help you they can either show the horse what's required by giving them a tickle with a dressage whip while you both get the idea or be there to assist at the front end if it starts going a bit wrong .
Paul Fielder wrote a great little book in the 'all about 'series ,all about long reining there's was a good lunging one too I am pretty sure they were published by Allen .
 
I tried long reining my new mare for the first time today thinking she would be brilliant at it from being a cart horse in Ireland. Not sure if shes rusty or just taking the p*** out of me but its definitely hard work! I've had the luck of being shown how to long rein on a horse that is good at it so if you can its best to find someone to show you on a horse that knows its job.
 
If you use a roller with the reins on the lowest loop, they generally lower. If they pull off and stick their heads up in the air they are maybe just afraid of it. My old trotter was a babe to ride, put him in a roller and lines and he would be a dragon beast who would try his hardest to get away from you just terrified.
