My last horse was very upright in the pastern with small upright feet for his size. Not ideal conformation and concussion was a problem at times but he had a successful career.

I am looking at potential horses to buy one has long pasterns and long fine cannon bones only 3yrs old though.

Anyone own a horse with this type of conformation and doing well/ok?
Thanks

Could still just be growing out, especially if it's just turned three, and it's TB in type. Are you able to look at the parents or siblings?

To me these are weaknesses in conformation, I think that good feet and a leg at each corner are the things to look for. If one wants a games pony or a racing pony, then one would look for different conformation, but still one does not seek out weaknesses just because one horse with these characteristics has proved to be useful.

I would regard long pasterns and long cannon bone as a fairly serious weakness. Take a look at the lead foreleg landing in any jumping picture and imagine that amount of strain repeated on a long pastern, which increases the forces by a multiple of the increase in length.

I knew a two year old had this fault. She's still eventing and is Advanced. Mind you, she did throw splints and have a tendon injury when she was younger.
