On solo hacks my horse can be quite dangerous and go his own way, ignore his aids, difficult to brake/steer (group hacks never an issue and he even takes the lead)

I've been advised by a horse trainer long reigning will help as i'm in a far better position to get him used to being up front by himself and i've more control from the back.

Any tips on long reigning, and has it worked for you in a similar situation?

It is good for confidence but Im not sure you have more control from behind with the issues you describe. If your horse is nappy which is what you are describing I dont think long reining will improve that. It sounds a bit like naughtiness?

Definatley helped my young horse, i spent months leading him out on solo hacks walking at the side of him and just getting on him when on the way home, he was very nappy, spooked at everything so then started long reining him lst in the school(were he was also very spooky) then progressed to long reining on a quiet sunday morning round a nearby nature trail, after doing this only 4 times we are finally hacking out on our own!!

Major breakthrough after months of leading him he finally got his confidence with me longreining instead of at the side of him. Wish i would have tried it months ago, Would recommend it!

I have a nappy little madam who I long rein around the roads and it works a treat.
If she try's to back up or turn around she get's the lunge whip poked up her backside and she soon behaves herself !!
