George was going round on the lunge like a bit of a donkey to be honest, square circles and nose poked out

. So having read a magazine article I decided to longrein him with his saddle on, stirrups tied together and lunge lines through the stirrups. To my knowledge he hasn't been longreined in the past few years if at all. It was rather exciting to start as George was very wary and I got myself tied in terrible knots (George stopped and waited whilst i got untangled

) Then we got going and he went like a dream, I only walked and trotted him and only 5mins each side as I guess it's hard work for him as he's not v. flexible yet but what a honey!

Oops sorry it's another pointless self indulgent post from me!

bless him, I love reading your happy posts about George, he sounds like such a superstar.

I know nothing about long reining - was it a recent magazine article?

It was in this month's 'Your Horse' magazine, the article was actually about schooling and there was a bit about long reining. There's also some good info in Kelly Mark's book 'Perfect Partners'. You would have laughed though I got in such a terrible mess to start with!

I read the same article and it was very good and informative. I have not tried long reining on a circle yet but long reined Mcfly along the bridle track on Sat and he was as good as gold really. Even stood still while I passed the ropes through his stirrups. He could have bolted if had wanted to but I told him to stand and he just did. Was very proud as I doubt Dougal would have acted the same.
He did keep trying to get a munch of grass along the track though lol bless him

bex1984 don't know if you'll get the mag now as the new one is out next week, but if you pm me your address I can photocopy it and send it to you.

Walder - it's just more like riding for the horse as you have a rein on each side and I understand that have the reins along their sides gives them the feeling of a leg aid, and on a circle the outside rein comes behind their back legs and 'suggests' them to use their hindlegs more. It also means with practise you can do anything you can do when riding! Warning, it was tiring as even on a circle you have to walk around quite a bit!

George is obviously very happy with you & clearly has a very patient & forgiving character, waiting whilst you got yourself all untangled etc.
He obviously trusts you already & is keen to please & co-operate, even when things aren't 'perfect' - what a lovely horse he is turning out to be!
