I have an ex-racer, he is working under saddle nicely, he will work on the lunge but I would like to get him to long rein. Any idea if he would have done this when he was in training? (I assume not, but don't know lots about racer training).

i'd treat any horse as though they haven't done it before unless i have seen them long reining myself!

some racing yards will, some won't, the same as any other yard that breaks horses- people have their own way of doing things

I longreined my ex racehorse for the first time on Thursday night. We started in the field going in straight lines then through the trees and then ventured out onto farm drive. He was very good and very responsive. I think it helps if there aren't too many distractions..!!!

When I broke yerlings for racing, we always long reined them. Most of them came from sales so had been lunged for a few weeks prior tothe sales, then had a bout 2 weeks longreining/driving in a roller, then a saddle. Wed start in the round pen the first day, then day 2 or 3 wed take them around the farm. All the farms I know didthe same so in many places its standard practice for racehorses - especially on the bigger yards.

Our racers are long reined before being broken, and it's pretty standard practice. I'm sure yours will be fine

I have started long reining mine quite often and he is brilliant at it, when I first long reined him last year knowing he hadn't done it in his previous home he was a superstar so I think he may have been long reined in training although he is never really phased by anything new.
