Long reining on roads ???

I want to long rein my lad tomorrow over our local woods. trouble is we have to cross at some traffic lights. Out of interest would you lead him over and up the road or carry on long reining.

he is vertually bomb proof, road we have to go up has a steady flow of traffic but nothing too bad ? I have led him up there before and been fine.

I can't trot him on the road as he has a clanky shoe and don't want to risk it fallin off as farrier not due for another 2 weeks. But dont want him to have yet another day off !!!

long rein him! my friend did with his sh*tland! he was gettin brought back into driving work as had spent some time slummin it with bracken!! just take someone with you if your worried to stay by his head just incase

i've long reined loads and always had 2 of us with the horse if we were long reining on roads. 1 to do the long reining, the other to be at hand to slow traffic or to hold the horses head. we also used to carry a whip so that if a car was too fast or too close they got a smack

My first reaction was no, but if you have a competent person at his head and wear your hi vis, should be ok

I long reined my mare all the time on roads as she can carriage drive, but to be honest in this case I would say no...just as sometimes traffic can go past fast and it would be reassuring for the horse to be up near his head as you cross.

In preparation for driving, I used to long-rein my mare along all sorts of roads, across round-abouts, traffic lights, the lot. I never had any problem, but that doesn't mean another horse won't. If you think your horse is bomb proof enough and you feel 100% safe, then you could try on your own, but it would obviously be safer with an extra pair of hands. If you are planning to drive then your horse will have to learn to wait at traffic lights and other junctions, so you will have to do it sometime. Just be careful

I would have an extra pair of hands really just in case and plenty of high viz to give yourself a fighting chance.
I sincerely hope you were joking about the use of the crop on cars!

i always long-reined (in prep for driving) with another person who will thank traffic and usually to hold a long lead rein or lunge on a headcollar so as not to impede on the 'drivers' control. we both wore hi-viz as well as horse
