I have been long reining my nappy horse to try and get some confidence into him (without much success) I am a long reining novice and am finding it quite difficult to get to grips.
Basically I am attaching two lunge lines to bit threading them through stirrups (which are run up quite high) and using a short lunge whip. He goes forward quite well on farm tracks but cannot get him past things in yard and gateways without him having a paddy when it all goes t*ts up and he spins round and I tend to get my hands caught in the coils of the lines and get my whip in a tangle! Im probably doing totally the wrong thing am I? Not got anyone locally to help. Any advice welcome !

Try letting the reins trial along behind rather than try to hold them all in your hands (if its safe where you're working of course) I can't deal with all that line in my hands either especially not with a whip as well.

I would drop the whip and take the lines out of the stirrups. Having the lines free gives you more room for maneuver. If he goes to whip round you have to preempt when he is going to do this and I usually back this up by tapping their sides with the rein and encouraging them forwards with my voice. If all else fails I will get them on a circle. I appreciate this isn't easy if you are on a lane and comes with practise!

thanks for advice, on browsing through the last 3 or 4 pages of this forum I see someone has already posted on this subject so I have got more info now. Cob is so very strong when he decides hes not doing something I think I go to pieces a bit, also need strong grips on my boots to stop me skiing behind !

Another way is to use some old lungelines and cut them to the length you want so that you havn't got loads of extra rope. And put a big knot in the end of them
