Hi Everyone :)

Iv'e just starting to long rein swallow the one probelm i'm having is she keeps trying to put her head down into the bridle touching the floor and not bolting but speeding up and really trying to pull. even when i say "woah" it's awhile to get control back.

Iv'e been holding the lines quite loose but it doesn't seem to help

is it just because it's something new or am i doing something wrong :o

thank you for any help in advance :)

My Exmoor does that, so I'd like know the answer too.

A couple of weeks ago he was doing it, he managed to scrape the back of his noseband with a front toe. The noseband snapped, there was a sort of tack explosion and the next thing I knew he was wearing his headcollar round his neck. Thoroughly pleased with himself he took off at about 50 mph round the school with me frantically trying to hang on to the lines. Six circuits later he came to a sudden stop and I cannoned into his fat bottom. Hmmm. Back to the drawing board then...but, yes, it's very annoying. The only thing I can think of to stop him ploughing with his nose on the long lines is daisy reins. I've tried doing smaller circles and lots of transitions but he still does.

When my pony does the head down thing, I give the aid to do something else pronto. Whether it be walk on, turn right, trot or even canter - on a circle, and we seem to be conquering it. Changes of rein are a good way too.
We've yet to master ''straight'', yet mind, but as far as I know that is the most difficult thing!

Don't know if can help but I am long reining my pony in harness, She has done normal long rein. We have to use the rein different to normal ie flap the reins on her side to make them walk on and stop them pulling down. My pony only had 3 lessons but she is better already.

Also I am right behind her instead of 1 horses length. The bit can play an important part in long reining !!!!

What bit are you using when you long rein???

Be as well to make a daisy rein out of string to stop them doing it. Titchy has a string one as real ones would have to attach to his tail to be effective and he never even tried to go for grass once that was on :). Doesn't interfere with his head at all either.

My youngster sometimes tries this when we're long-reining round the lanes. I find the best thing to do is to send her forwards - so if we're walking, I make her trot on (until I'm tired and then I bring her back to walk). OP do persevere - mine used to do it all the time but is now so much better - this morning I took her out for 40 minutes and she only did it once. Good luck!
