Long reining

Just getting my boy started with long reining and hope to progress from the yard to around the field in time. How many long rein on the roads or do you only go there once backed and hacking out? I wasn't planning on long reining on the roads and instead getting OH to walk with me once we are ready to venture out.

I long reined before backing just in the field, then I walked out in hand before riding out on a lead rein, then went with person next to no rein then person behind, they dropped further and further back until I just went alone.

I do but our roads very quiet-mostly farm machinery and the farm guys are all great. I do a fair bit off road first though so I know they're ok. I have to lead in hand to get to the forestry tracks before then but then have miles to practice before we do it for real.
