I have a loan horse who can not be hacked out, he completely freaks and it's unsafe, but we do have a large field.

Would there be any benefit in long reining him in the big field to break up the ridden work and stop him getting bored?

Absolutely. I love long reining. You can see things on the ground that you can’t onboard and refine your aids without the added matter of your weight aids.

Of course it depends why he’s unsafe. Is it just the being out in the big wide world? I think long reining can build confidence too when done correctly.

He's a it of a baby and is scared but the way he reacts is by bolting and as he's so big there is absolutely no stopping him.

I tried riding in the big field (it's secure) but he almost had me off a few times spooking, but I've hand walked him in there and he was turned out there in the summer

Long reining is excellent, but if he decides to piss off while in the long reins that is not good. Do get him used to the lines in a closed smaller space such as an arena, and have a helper close by who can lead him as necessary.

Are you experienced at long reining? If not, get someone who is to try him out in them first.

I'm experienced long reining, I've helped with start youngsters for driving .

I'd start in the arena where I know he is comfortable and it's not a big space even though I truthfully don't think he will piss off as the only time he's done that is when you try to take him out hacking. The spooking in the field is normally those sideways spooks that have you out the side door!

I love long reining! I am currently rehabbing one of mine and I can watch his back end very closely to ensure even movement and quickly spot signs of alight lameness/stiffness. It's also really good fitness for me - he's a fast walker so I have to really power walk to keep up! I take mine all over the spot - we'll be moving up to about an hour next week :)
