Fynn's and my 'homework' from the trainer is to increase the distance Fynn will run in a straight line for a blind retrieve. We were over the fields and Fynn had done a couple of 100ish yard blind retrieves with a dummy with pheasant wings attached (to give it a stronger smell).
There was a lovely steady wind at our backs as I walked through the gap between two fields, Fynn was away investigating a smell, so I dropped the dummy in the gap and continued across the field. I thought as it was the last one I would go for a really long one. We were maybe 150+ yards away when a couple of shooters with their spaniels appeared. They were going to shoot the wood over the other side of the valley. Fynn and their dogs greeted each other, and we stopped for a chat- I usually get asked what sort of dog Fynn is (there aren't many Vizsla's round here). I told them he is a HPR, no I don't shoot with him, but he is being trained as a gun dog- the usual
As we parted I told them I had dropped a dummy near the gap and would they mind keeping their dogs close so I could send Fynn out, one of them called his dogs in and sat them. I lined Fynn up, saying a quiet prayer to the retrieving gods, not to make me look too silly if Fynn ignored the dummy for their dogs
I need not have worried Fynn went like a rocket!! straight to the gap, 2 second search picked up the dummy and brought back to me- AND into my hand!!!!
One of the guys said to the other 'I bet you wish you dog would work at that distance' to which the other replied 'I don't need her to- you can't hit anything more than 20yards away'
I just said a quiet thanks to the gods
