Long riding boots- snug ankles

Any recommendations HHOers? I had thought short lace up ariats would keep my ankle (recovering from being broken) stable the most but having tried them in the shop they actually don’t feel as stable as long boots. Too much movement forwards and backwards, despite being as tight as they go.

So looking for some long riding boots for daily use. Ideally under 200 pounds that have good ankle support/snugness and won’t go baggy. My mountain horse ones for competition use don’t fit the bill and are currently being vet wrapped around the outside considerably!

To be totally honest I doubt you'll find any, they are made to collapse at the ankle. You'd be better off investing in a good ankle brace to wear in my opinion.

I'd buy a good ankle brace and ride in a loose enough boot to get on over it, like a Velcro mucker. If you are adamant about competing/hunting (been there ) and needing to wear long black boots, then I'd get my resident craftsman to make supports in aluminium and vetwrap them around the outside of a tight boot with black vetwrap.

Decent leather chaps with short boots would offer more support, especially with an ankle support inside as well.

I have bought a good (and expensive) ankle brace (the aircast 60 which has rigid support along the bone that I broke), but if i shove it on under boots it really rubs on my incision/scar tissue so becomes uncomfortable very quickly... hmmmm

The heritage... they felt good from side to side but just not tight enough all around though as cobgoblin said, maybe the chaps would make a difference holding that in...

Tredstep have a nice snug ankle. I just bought the donatellos and they are very snug and supportive without being rigid if that makes sense. I broke my ankle a few years back and its never been right since, ridden today in the tredstep and they're very supportive and provide a nice firm hold for the dodgy ankle

Thanks very much! A shame to hear, where did you break it? I suspect I'll need the pins out of mine at some stage but so far x rays show its healing well. Feels a long way from normal though

Thin gel layer under aircast? Several large compeed plasters? I sympathise in your desire to ride, I've done a BE90 with a cast on my arm when I was nearer your age!

Ha! I love that. I did listen to HHO and try and lunge but... didn't last long. Have been given a semi all clear by the doc to "legally" ride now though, although he said give it a couple more weeks before doing anything too risky.

Have to say, as paddy on here said, riding has been the absolute best physio for my ankle.

Gel layer a good idea!
